Ethnic background combined with family, customs, traditions, beliefs, habits.

What is a cultural group?

A group of people who all believe or represent themselves in a certain way.

How is Culture passed on?

Culture is passed on through parents and elders, it is altered and affected by society.

How is culture preserved?

Through music, cloths, continuing traditions, history books, stories.

Why is culture important to societies?

It is important for societies to have multiple cultural groups so that they can progress and continue changing as a society

How do cultures change and evolve

The world around us is constantly evolving and growing, and sometimes, some older customs and traditions are left behind, to create new and more progressive ways to do something

Is Canadian culture different today, than it was at our grandparents age?

Yes, Canadian culture has become more technology based, women have more rights, we know more about different parts of the world, and we are working to be more accepting of all races, and sexualities...

Does being from a certain culture (mainstream or minority) have certain advantages or disadvantages?

Being in mainstream groups comes with certain advantages. the majority of people can relate and understand that culture, they are not seen as weird or strange, which can happen if you are apart of a minority culture that most people do not understand.

Does society really celebrate all cultures? Why or why not?

It is difficult for society to accept all cultures, seeing as there are just so many different cultures.

Have your studies of history presented all cultures and cultural groups with the same amount of worth?

No, they have tended to have a stronger emphasis on white culture, and the mainstream culture of our region. with some sections on the Acadian's, and the first nations people.

Who is excluded from the history books?

Generally the people who lose in history are not given as much attention as those who have won. history books written about white men, by white men, for white men...

If these people are covered, what is included about them?

When minorities, or the "losers" are included in history books, it is generally to point out their mistakes, or flaws.

Do you think your generation is more culturally sensitive and aware than that of your parents? explain

Yes, we are more educated about the world, and are more exposed to different cultures.

Why do we study history?

It is important to learn and understand things from the past, so we can learn from and build onto it.

Who writes the history books?

People who have lived through it, who are highly educated in it.

most people feel that if something does not involve them, it does not concern them

The view, conscious or otherwise, of placing emphasis on European (western) concerns, cultures, values, and experiences at the expense of to other cultures.

A view which emphasizes the importance of African peoples, especially in relation to historical or cultural influence

Throughout history there has been a general emphasis on Euro-centrism, in North America, as well as in Europe and other parts of the world.

Why is history important?

History helps to understand how we got to where we are.

Why do courses like ACS, and Mi'kmaw studies exist?

Students need to learn and appreciate our background, and be given the chance to learn about minority groups that are not covered in the traditional history textbook.

ADVANTAGES: animals, vegetation/food, ecosystems, coverage




DISADVANTAGES: dangerous, animals, moist, not very livable, can be destroyed

Discrimination is to act on prejudice

Oppression is a cruel exercise of power

What does it mean for a group of people to be marginalized

when a group of people are marginalized it means to push them to the side or to ignore/silence them

What is the difference between equality and equity? Why is it important to understand the difference when trying to understand people who were once or still are oppressed?

Equality is treating everyone the exact same, whereas equity is treating people fairly based on their needs. It is important because every group of people have different needs. most people try to push for equality but in reality there needs to be a give and take based on individual needs.

Humans evolved differently based on their geographical location. Our unique characteristics are based mainly off climate.
