What is the purpose of the air compressor?

Locomotives are provided with an air compressor which is driven by a diesel engine crankshaft.

The purpose of the air compressor is to provide compressed air for the use on the locomotive, the train braking system and other pneumatic devices such as the whistle, VC, windscreen wipers, sanders, seat etc.

The compressor delivers the compressed air to the main reservoir where it is stored, cooled and ready for use.

N class locomotives have water cooled compressors.

Y class locomotives have air cooled air compressors.

Air is forced into the inter cooler at a pressure of about 210 kPa where it is cooled.

What is the purpose of the air compressor governor?

The air compressor governor controls the cutting in and cutting out of the air compressor maintaining the main reservoir pressure automatically.

What are the air pressure settings at which the air compressor should cut in and cut out under normal conditions?

Cuts in at 750kPa and cuts out at 850kPa.

What is the correct procedure to increase the output capacity of the air compressor?

Y class

By closing No2 cock the air compressor will be permanently cut in and the main reservoir pressure will rise to the setting of the main reservoir safety valve.

What is the correct procedure to permanently load or unload the air compressor?

Compressor unloaded

When air pressure in the main reservoir reaches 850 KPA the compressor governor allows main reservoir pressure to flow into the unloader lines to the unloader valves (cut out) which results in the inlet valve on each cylinder being held off its seat.

No1 cock closed.

Compressor loaded

When main reservoir pressure falls to 750 KPA the governor operates to allow the compressor to load by allowing the air in the unloader lines to escape (cut in). The compressor pumps air until main reservoir pressure again reaches the maximum setting of the governor.

No2 cock closed.
