Define the term joint, or articulation
An articulation or joint is a point of contact between bones
List the three major classes of joints according to both a structural and a functional scheme
Structural classification: fibrous, cartilaginous, & synovial. Functional: synarthroses, amphiarthroses, and diarthroses
Name the three types of fibrous joints and give one example of each.
Syndesmoses: joint between distal ends of the radius and ulna. Sutures: found only in skull. Gomphoses: between the tooth and the alveolar process of the mandible or maxilla
Identify the two types of cartilaginous joints and give one example of each.
Synchondroses: betwn the 1st rib & sternum & the joint present during the growth years betwn the epiphysis of a long bone & its diaphysis. Symphyses: symphysis pubis & the articulation betwn the bodies of adjacent vertebrae
List the seven structures that characterize synovial joints.
Joint capsule, synovial membrane, articular cartilage, joint cavity, menisci, ligaments, and bursae
Name the 3 main categories of synovial joints grouped according 2 axial movement & list the 2 subtypes of joints found in each category.
Uniaxial joints: hinge & pivot joints. Biaxial joints: saddle & condyloid joints. Multiaxial joints: ball &socket & gliding joints
Which joint is the largest, most complex, and most frequently injured in the body?
Knee joint
List the two anatomical components of an intervertebral disk.
Fibrous tissue and fibrocartilage
Amphiarthroses -
slightly movable joint such as the one that connects the two pubic bones
Bursa -
small, cushion-like sacs found between moving body parts, making movement easier
Diarthroses –
freely moving joint
Joint -
junction between two or more bones; articulation
Menisci –
articular cartilage disk
Suture -
immovable joint, such as those between the bones of the skull
Symphysis -
joint characterized by the presence of a pad or disk of fibrocartilage connecting the two bones
Synarthroses -
joint in which fibrous connective tissue joins bones and holds them together tightly; commonly called sutures
