14 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
Isoprenaline
Synthetic beta-selective agonist
Phenyleephrine, Methoxamine (non-selective)
Selective alpha1 agonist - causes constriction, used as nasal decongestant
Dobutamine
beta1 agonist - increase contractility, treat cardiogenic shock
Salbutamol
beta2 agonist - relax bronchial smooth muscle, treats asthma
Indirectly acting sympathomimetics
Similar structures to NA but do not activate receptors, enter via uptake 1 e.g. amphetamine (drug abuse), ephedrine (nasal decongestant)
non-selective alpha antagonists?
effects, 4 drugs
Causes hypotension, postural hypotension (alpha1 blockade)
Increases CO and causes tachycardia (alpha2 blockade)
e.g. Phenoxybenzamine, Phenolamine
Labetol and carvediol (alpha and beta actions reduces effect on heart) used to treat hypertension
Selective alpha1 antagonists? (3)
effets, use, side effects
Caues vasodilation, fal in arterial presure
used as antihypertensive e.g. prazosin, doxaszosin, terazocin
side effects - postural hypotension
Tamsulosin
selective alpha1 antagonist, relaxes bladder smooth muscle, used to treat urinary retention associated with an enlarged protate
Yohimbine
selective alpha-2 antagonist, experimental, vasodilator and stimulant effects, used to treat male impotence, aphrodisiac, may incease fat burn
Propranolol
Beta1 and beta2 antagonist, contraindicated with salbutamol (beta2 agonist, treats asthma)
Actions of beta antagonists? (4)
1)reduces effect of exercise on cardiovascular system (lowers O2 demand of the heart)
2) antidysrhythmis effects in heart disease
3) antihypertensive - reduces CO, renin release and sympathetic activity (CNS activity)
4) prevent tremor
Side-effects of beta-antagonists?(6)
1)bronchoconstriction (beta2)
2)Cardiac failure - reduce sympathetic tone
3)bradycardia
4)Hypoglycaemia (symptons that warn diabetics of it is reduced)
5) Fatigue (due to reduced CO)
6) cold extremities (loss of beta2 dilation)
Cardiovascular uses of beta antagonists? (3)
1) hypertension
2)angina
3)cardiac disrhythmias (protective after MI)
Other uses of beta antagonists?(5)
1)glaucoma (timolol)
2)anxiety
3)hyperthyroid disease
4)tremor
5)migrain
