Biopsychology origins |
Biopsychology has links to
. Philosophy . Science . Medicine . Technology
These influences have contributed towards the diversity of contemporary biopsychology.
The origins and development of biopsychology are also intertwined with the school of thought in psychology such as
. Cognitivism . Behaviourism |
|
Humorism? |
An ancient school of thought concerned with the balance of the body's naturally produced substance:
. Bile . Blood . Phlegm |
|
Cognitivism? |
A school of thought concerned with human cognition |
|
Behaviourism? |
A school of thought concerned with purely observable and measurable human and animal behaviour |
|
Approaches in biopsychology? |
biopsychology consist of several different approaches such as:
. Physiological psychology . Neuropsychology . Cognitive neuroscience . Behavioural genetics . Psychopharmacology
Each of these approaches focuses on different levels of analysis and employs different techniques and interpretations |
|
The mind-body problem? |
A philosophical debate concerning the relationship between the dominant of the mind and the body. |
|
Mind/body problem
The mind |
The mind is about the mental processes:
. Thoughts . Beliefs . Pains . Sensations . Emotions . Soul
The mind is made of immaterial substance which couldn't be study by scientist, couldn't be trapped by any of the scientific instruments... |
|
Mind/body problem
The body |
The body is about the physical aspect of the brain-neurons and how the brain is structured, e.g
. Matter . Atoms . Neurons . Hormones
Your body, trees, iron, metals are made of physical substance. |
|
Dualist/dualism? |
A perspective which states the mind and body both exist as separate entities which contribute toward the sense of reality
And Contemporary biopsychology tends to adopt a dualist perspective. |
|
Idealism? |
A perspective which states that the only reality is that created by the mind |
|
Materialism? |
A perspective which states that the only reality is that experienced by the body |
|
Monistic perspective: idealism |
the monist perspective known as idealism states that the mind exists independent of the body, implying that bodily responses are irrelevant in determining behaviour and experience. |
|
Monist perspective: Materialism |
the monist perspective known as materialism states that only the physical reality is real, making all phenomena which cannot be observed and quantified irrelevant. |
|
the dualist perspective: interactionism |
The dualist perspective known as interactionism states that there is a two-way relationship between the mind and the body. In this sense, bodily responses can influence thought and cognition can mediate bodily responses. |
|
The dualist perspective: parallelism |
The dualist perspective known as parallelism, which states that there is a correlation between the mind and body rather than causation.
For example, in cases where ‘blind-sight’ individuals are able to reach for an object of which they are not consciously aware. |
|
Monist/ monism: |
A perspective which states that either the mind or the body exists independently. There is only one reality and that may be through the mind (idealism) or the body (materialism). |
