What controls the cell's activities and replication? |
A strand of DNA in the cytoplasm controls those functions. |
What feature can a Bacteria have to help it move? |
A flagellum (tail). |
What 4 shapes can a Bacterial cell take the form of? |
Rods, Curved rods, Spheres and Spirals. |
How can Bacteria be able to live in multiple habitats without struggle? |
Bacteria are able to consume a large range of organic nutrients from their surroundings. |
How are Bacteria able to reproduce? |
Bacteria are able to reproduce through asexual reproduction by cloning itself. |
At what conditions are Bacteria able to reproduce faster? |
Bacteria are able to reproduce faster at warmer temperatures with a good source of nutrients. |
What is used to culture (grow) Bacteria? |
An agar dish is used to grow Bacteria, consisting of a Petri dish containing agar jelly. |
What technique is used to protect yourself from harmful Bacteria when culturing? |
The aseptic technique is used which involves wearing gloves, sterilising equipment and sealing the dish. |
What food can Bacteria be used to produce? |
Bacteria can be used to produce yoghurt. |
What are the 4 main types of micro organisms? |
-Bacteria -Fungi -Viruses -Protozoa |
Where is the only place viruses can reproduce? |
Viruses can only reproduce inside of living cells. |
What cells are viruses able to infect? |
Viruses are able to infect plant, animal and bacterial cells. |
What does a typical virus consist of? |
A typical virus will consist of genetic material held inside of a protein coat. |
What are the 4 main ways different diseases can be transmitted? |
Diseases can be transmitted through food (Food poisoning), water (Cholera), airborne droplets (Influenza) and through contact (Athlete's foot). |
What is usually a common cause of disease? |
Poor sanitation (e.g. not washing hands or face) |
What are the 4 main stages in an infectious disease? |
-The micro organism enters the body e.g. through the nose. -Once in the body, it will rapidly reproduce. -The micro organisms will then produce toxins which damage cells and tissues. -The toxins can cause symptoms of infection e.g. coughing, stomach pains etc. |
