How is maintaining a healthy bat population important to humans? Name two reasons.

Bats prevent insects from devouring agriculture by reducing their population. Bats reduce the rate of infectious diseases by eating mosquitos, the worlds deadliest animal to humans, due to their transmissable nature.

What disease that mosquitos carry is most deadly to humans?

Malaria, it kills hundreds of thousands of people each year.

Define science. Operationalize science's five defining characteristics.

Science is both a body of knowledge about the natural world and an evidence based process for generating that knowledge. The five defining characteristics is as follows: 1. Science deals with the natural world, which can be detected, observed, and measured. 2. Science is based on evidence that can be demonstrated through observations and/or experiments. 3. Science is subject to independent validation and peer review. 4. Science is open to challenge by anyone at anytime on the basis of evidence. 5. Science is a self-correcting enterprise.

What were the technician's initial mistake when trying to emulate the WNS fungus?

They tried to grow the fungus at room temperature instead of matching the cold temperature of caves where they originally found the fungus.

Define metabolism.

The capture, storage, and use of energy by living organisms.

A scientific hypothesis should be presented in such a way that it is potentially (blank)?

Falsifiable.

Why was WNS so fatal to bats?

WNS woke the bats up too many times during the winter which resulted in depleted fat reserves making them more susceptible to the cold. WNS ate through the bats wings which made it hard to fly, and also maintain healthy levels of water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.

What are the five steps of the scientific method?

Observation, hypothesis, prediction, test, peer-review.

What is the order of the biological hierarchy?

Atom, molecule, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere.

There are twelve.

What are the six characteristics of living organisms?

1. They are built of cells; some are single celled and some are multicellular. 2. They reproduce, using DNA to pass genetic information from parent to offspring. 3. They take in energy from the environment. 4. They sense and respond to their environment. 5. They exhibit homeostasis, maintaining constant internal conditions. 6. They can evolve as groups.
