What is diffusion?

The passive movement of a solute from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. This movement is driven by a concentration gradient.

What is Osmosis?

The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane. Water will always move in the direction where there is a high concentration of solute (hence a lower concentration of water)

When molecules are even throughout a space what is this called?

Equilibrium

What is a concentration gradient?

A difference between concentrations in a space, molecules will always move down the concentration gradient to areas of lesser concentration

What is a simple rule to remember?

Salt Sucks.

Water will always move in the direction of a solute (salt)

Why do people shrivel in the ocean?

The water in their bodies has undergone the process of Osmosis and moved where there is a greater concentration of solute (salt). In the ocean it is salt water, which explains the loss of water in the body.

Where will the water move in this situation;

There is 10% solute inside the cell and 20% outside.

The water will move outside the cell.

There is a higher concentration of molecules inside my cell, in comparison to the amount of molecules on the outside. Where would the molecules go? What process is this?

The molecules would move along the concentration gradient to the outside of the cell, this is known as diffusion.
