Atoms |
The smalls unit of an element. Links by chemical bonds to form molecules. |
Molecules |
Two or more atoms. Molecules form the structures that make up a cell. |
Cell |
Basic structural form of living beings. Groups of cells form tissue. |
Organ |
Composed of cells and tissues. Most organs do not function alone but as an organ system. |
How many organ systems? |
11 |
Circulatory |
Component: heart, blood vessels Function: Transport if blood, which carries oxygen, nutrients and waste ect. |
Digestive |
Component: Digestive Tract (mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines) and accessory organs (salivary glands, pancreas, liver, gallbladder) Function: Digestion, absorption of meals |
Endocrine |
Components: Pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, pancreas and ductless glands Function: Production and release of hormones |
Lymphatic |
Components: Lymph nodes, lymph vessels, spleen Function: Drainage, immunity, transport of fat-soluble nutrients |
Digestion System |
Process in which food is broken down into small pieces (Digestion) so they can be absorb into blood stream/lymphatic system (absorption). |
What can be absorbed into body? |
Sugars, amino acids and fatty acids |
What can’t be absorbed into body? |
Polysaccharides, proteins and lipids (in the form they are consumed). |
Structure of digestion tract |
1.Mouth 2.Salivary Glands 3.Pharynx 4.Esophagus 5.Stomach 6.Liver 7.Pancreas 8.Gallbladder 9.Small Intestine 10. Large Intestine 11. Anus |
The Mouth |
Chemical digestion: saliva Mechanical digestion: Use of tongue and 32 teeth to physically digest food. Food now called bolus. |
2. The Pharynx |
Aka throat Swallowing occurs here. The bolus (chewed food) moves to back of mouth and during swallowing Epiglottis (flap) blocks airways so bolus goes to next segment of gastrointestinal tract. Directs air to trachea when epiglottis open |
Epiglottis |
Getting food down the right tube (lil flap) |
Stomach |
Esophagus>Spincter>longitudinal muscle layer>circular muscle layer>diagonal muscle layer>sphincter>small intestine |
