Visual Cortex

Part of the occipital lobe responsible for receiving and processing visual information originating in the eyes

Brainstem

Part of the brain associated with subconscious functions that acts as a bridge between the cerebrum and spinal cord

Limbic System

A system found in the middle of the brain made up of the amygdala, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, thalamus, and hypothalamus that is responsible for fight or flight responses, caring for offspring, memory storing, memory retrieval, regulating emotions, and repeating behaviors (that often provide a quick-reward)

Prefrontal Cortex

A part of the frontal lobe associated with focusing, impulse control, and predicting consequences of one's action(s)

Cerebrum

The largest part of the brain that can be divided into two hemispheres

Amygdala

Responsible for regulating emotions and encoding emotional remembrances in the limbic system

Frontal Lobe

Responsible for memory, personality, impulse control, and problem-solving in the cerebral cortex

Occipital Lobe

Responsible for perceiving and processing visual information in the cerebral cortex

Primary Motor Cortex

Responsible for coordination and dexterity in the cerebral cortex

Central Sulcus

Division between the primary motor cortex and the primary sensory cortex, increasing surface area of the cerebral cortex and making room for more neurons, which allows the brain to process more information

Olfactory Bulb

Part of the limbic system that receives information about smells and sends it to the brain

Broca's Area

Responsible for the production of speech in the frontal lobe

Parietal Lobe

Responsible for processing touch, pain, temperature, and sense of limb position as well as coordinating the movement of limbs in the cerebral cortex

Premotor Cortex

Part of the frontal lobe responsible for planning voluntary movements and actions

Primary Sensory Cortex

Responsible for processing touch, pain, temperature, and other bodily sensations in the parietal lobe

Wernicke's Area

Responsible for the understanding of speech in the temporal lobe

Auditory Cortex

Responsible for processing sounds in the temporal lobe

Cerebral Cortex

The outermost layer of the cerebrum associated with consciousness and intelligence

Hypothalamus

Part of the limbic system responsible for keeping the body stable state (homeostasis) by managing hormones and influencing the nervous system

Hippocampus

Vulnerable part of the limbic system associated with memory and learning that is responsible for spatial navigation, spatial processing, contextualising fear, and storing long-term memories

Temporal Lobe

Responsible for processing, understanding, and remembering feelings and language in the cerebral cortex

Thalamus

Relays motor and sensory signals from the limbic system to the cerebral cortex

Somatosensory Association Area

Part of the parietal lobe that receives neurons from visual systems, auditory systems, and the primary sensory cortex and uses the input to influence motor activity
