RAO Sternum

Where is the CR?

CR to the center of the sternum and 1” to the left

What is the breathing instructions?

Orthostatic Breathing

What are the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?Sternum is visualized and superimposed over the heart shadow. Sternum located alongside vertebral column with no superimposition. No distortion due to excessive rotation of the thorax.

Lateral Sternum

Where is the CR and how is the patient positioned?

Perpendicular to IR and centered to the sternum.

What are the breathing instructions?

Inspiration

What are the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?Entire sternum with minimal overlap of soft tissues. Sternum in profile shows no rotation. No superimposition of humeri, shoulders, soft tissues, or ribs.

PA Bilateral SC Joints

Where is the CR?

CR Perpendicular and centered to T-2 T-3 (Approx. 3” distal to C-7)

What is the breathing instructions?

On expiration

What are the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?Lateral aspect of manubrium and medial portion of the clavicles visualized lateral to vertebral column through superimposing ribs and lungs. Equal distance of SC joints from vertebral column on both sides.

RAO SC Joint (Right SC Joint)

Where is the CR?

CR perpendicular to level of (T2-T3) 3 inches distal to C-7 and 1-2 inches lateral (toward upside) to midsagittal plane

What is the breathing instructions?

Suspend on expiration

What are the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?Manubrium and medial portion of clavicles and sternoclavicular joints are best demonstrated on the downside. SC joint on the upside will be foreshortened. No superimposition of the vertebral column or manubrium.

Bilateral PA Ribs Above Diaphragm

Where is the CR?

CR perpendicular to IR centered at T7 7-8 inches below C-7

What is the breathing instruction?

On Inspiration

What are the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?Ribs 1 through 9 visualized above the diaphragm. No rotation shown with symmetrical SC joints and ribs. Spinous Processes should also be aligned vertically.

AP Below Diaphragm Bilateral Ribs

Where is the CR?

CR perpendicular to IR centered midway between the xiphoid process and the lower rib margin.

What is the breathing instructions?

On expiration

What is the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?Ribs 10-12 (minimum) should be visualized. No rotation shown by Spinous Processes should be aligned vertically.

AP Projection Unilateral Upper Left Ribs

Where is the CR?

CR perpendicular to IR centered midway between midsagittal plane and lateral margin of thorax at a level 3 to 4 inches below jugular notch.

What are the breathing instructions?

On Inspiration

What are the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?Ribs 1 through 9 should be visualized. No rotation shown with the SC joints symmetrical and spinous processes aligned vertically.

LPO Below Diaphragm Left Axillary Ribs

Where is the CR?

CR level midway between xiphoid process and lower rib margin.

(Bottom of IR at the level of the Iliac Crest.)

What is the breathing instructions?

On Expiration

What is the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?Ribs 10 through 12 should be demonstrated and seen below the diaphragm. Axillary portion of the ribs under examination is projected with no superimposition.

AP Below Diaphragm Right Axillary Ribs

Where is the CR?

CR level midway between xiphoid process and lower rib margin.

What is the breathing instructions?

On Expiration

What are the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?

Ribs 10 through 12 should be demonstrated. No rotation shown with the vertical alignment of the spinous processes. If low enough, symmetrical appearance of the iliac crests.

LPO Above Diaphragm Left Axillary Ribs

Where is the CR?

3 to 4 inches below the jugular notch (T-7) or 7 to 8 inches below C7.

What is the breathing instructions?

On Inspiration

What are the evaluation criteria’s and how do you know there is no rotation?

Ribs 1 through 9 shown above the diaphragm. Spine should be shifted away from the area of interest for no superimposition of the area of interest.
