New Deal

The historic period (1933-1940) in the U.S. during which President Franklin Roosevelt's economic policies were implemented.

Wagner Act

Law passed in 1935 that aided unions by legalizing collective bargaining and closed shops, and by establishing the National Labor Relations Board.

Social Security

System established by the 1935 Social Security Act to provide financial security, in the form of regular payments, to people who cannot support themselves.

Mary McLeod Bethune

She was the highest ranking African American woman in FDR's New Deal program. She was appointed director of [NYA] Division of Negro Affairs of the National Youth Administration.

Closed Shops

A working establishment where only people belonging to the union are hired. It was done by the unions to protect their workers from cheap labor.

American Liberty League

Organization founded in 1934 to oppose the New Deal.

Huey Long

Louisianan Senator who opposed FDR's New Deal and came up with a , "Share the Wealth" wants to give $5k to all families ,was later assassinated

Deficit Spending

The government practice of spending more than it takes in from taxes.

Court Packing

When FDR tried to add 6 new judges to the Supreme court who would back up his New Deal policies. This brought the president a lot of Negative criticism from all sides.

John Steinbeck

He was an American author who wrote many books who brought to light the despair and troubles of ordinary people during the Depression.

[CCC] Civilian Conservation Corps

It reduced poverty and unemployment by helping young men and families. young men go to rural camps for 6 months to do construction work and help with soil erosion, state/national parks, and telephone/power lines.

[TVA] Tennessee Valley Authority

A New Deal agency created to generate electric power and control floods in a seven-U.S.-state region around the Tennessee River Valley . It created many dams that provided electricity as well as jobs.

[AAA] Agricultural Adjustment Administration

Restricted agricultural production in the New Deal era by paying farmers to reduce crop area. Its purpose was to reduce crop surplus so as to effectively raise the value of crops.

[NIRA] National Industrial Recovery Act

A New Deal legislation that focused on the employment of the unemployed and the regulation of unfair business ethics.

[SEC] Securities and Exchange Commission

Regulated the sock market and protected investors from dishonest trading practices.

[FHA] Federal Housing Administration

Improved housing standards and conditions. It also provided home financing.

[PWA] Public Works Administration

It sponsored massive public works projects such as dams and hydroelectric plants.

[NLRB] National Labor Relations Board

This enforced provisions of the Wagner Act, which included the right to collective bargaining and other union right.

[FDIC] Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

This insured bank deposits up to $5,000.

[WPA] Works Progress Administration

A massive work relief program that funded projects ranging from construction to acting.
