Recite: 1 Peter 1.15-16

p. 21

1 Peter 1.15-16

But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written,“You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

How is holiness related to God's existence?

p. 22

Holiness is an essential part of the nature of God. His holiness is as necessary as is His existence. His holiness declares not only does He know what is right, but also He can only do what is right.

Describe the nature of God's holiness in relation to evil.

p. 22

God's holiness is perfect freedom from all evil, because God always does what is just and right without the slightest hesitation. It is impossible in the very nature of God for Him to do otherwise.

Should we be comforted by God's perfect holiness?

p. 23

Yes. The absolute holiness of God should be of great comfort and assurance to us. If God is perfectly holy, then we can be confident that His actions towards us are always perfect and just.

In difficult circumstances, why should we not complain against God?

p. 23-24

We must accept by faith that God is holy, even when trying circumstances make it appear otherwise.

To complain against God is in effect to deny His holiness and to say He is not fair.

What is one way you can praise God?

p. 24

Acknowledging that He is His holy is one way we are to praise God.

How does God's holiness relate to all of His other attributes?

p. 25

Holiness is the perfection of all His other attributes: His power is holy power; His mercy is holy mercy; His wisdom is holy wisdom. It is His holiness more than any other attribute that makes Him worthy of our praise.

Recite: Hebrews 12.14

p. 26

"Make every effort ... to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord."

Attitude: have a readiness of heart to bear the image of your Father.

Having our sins forgiven does not mean God has excused our sinning. What is God's attitude toward our sin?

p. 27-28

Every time we sin, we are doing something God hates.

He hates our lustful thoughts, our pride, our jealousy, our outbursts of temper, and our rationalization that the end justifies the means.

Have you become so accustomed to your sins that you have lapsed in to a peaceful coexistence with them? What should be your attitude?

p. 28

Hatred of sin as sin, not just something disquieting or defeating to ourselves, but displeasing to God, lies at the root of all true holiness.

We need to cultivate in our own hearts the same hatred of sin God has.

What is God's standard for character, attitude, affections and action?

p. 29-30

While it is true that He accepts us solely through the merit of Christ, God's standard for our character, attitudes, affections, and actions is, "Be holy, because I am holy". We must take this seriously if we are to grow in holiness.
