Circadian rhythm
disciple a rhythm that is roughly 24 hours long; the cyclical daily fluctuations in biological and psychological processes such as the secretion of growth hormones and sleep
suprachiasmatic nucleus
a tiny cluster of neurons in the hypothalamus. this is the internal peacemaker that governs the timing of circadian rhythms, including the sleep wake cycle.
Electroencephalograph
an instrument that uses electrodes placed on the scalp to measure and record the brain's electrical activity.
EEG

hypnagogic hallucinations
vivid sensory phenomena that occurred during the onset of sleep such as falling, floating and other types of hallucinations.

NREM sleep
quiet, typically dreamless sleep in which rapid eye movements are absent; divided into four stages.
Stage 1 NREM
the transition from Alpha brain waves to theta brain waves. This stage of NREM last only a few minutes during which you gradually disengage from the sensations of the surrounding world.
Stage 2 NREM
this stage of NREM represents is the true onset of sleep. The appearance of the sleep spindles, brief bursts of brain activity that last a second or two and K complexes, single high-voltage spikes of brain activity, continues to slow down considerably.slight muscle twitches me occur. Data waves are predominant in this stage but longer, slower brain waves, called Delta brain waves, also begin to emerge.
Stage 3 NREM
this stage of sleep also called slow wave sleep is when the Delta brain waves represent more than 20% of total brain activity.
Stage 4 NREM
this stage of sleepis on the Delta brain waves eventually represent 100% of total brain activity after 70 minutes of sleep this stage begins to reverse.
REM sleep
during this stage of sleep the brain becomes more active and generating smaller and faster brain waves. dreams may occur during this period although the brain is very active, voluntary muscle activities is suppressed. This first episode tends to be brief about 5 to 10 minutes. After this stage about 90 minutes of sleep have elapsed
sleep paralysis
a temporary condition in which a person is unable to move upon awakening in the morning or during the night
REM and NREM rebound
the occurrences of which a person is deprived of these stages of sleep. As a result once they enter the stages of sleep again, the time spent in this stage can greatly increase, making up for sleep deprivation.
sleep thinking
Vega, bland, thought like ruminations about a real-life events and that typically occur during NREM sleep.
Dream
an unfolding sequence of thoughts, perceptions, and emotions that tidbit we occurred during REM sleep and is experienced as a series of real-life events
Nightmare
A vividly frightening or unpleasant dream that occurs during REM sleep.

Thought of by Freud, as being the underlining unconscious wishes, wants, desires and meaning of a dream.
Activation-Synthesis model of dreaming
The theory of dreaming , first proposed by J. Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley, that brain activity during sleep produces dream images (activation), which are combined by the the brain into a dream story ( Synthesis).
