Box-and-whisker plot
A diagram that summarizes data using the median, the upper and lower quartiles, and the extreme values. A box in drawn around the quartile values and whiskers extend from each quartile to the extreme data points.
Circle graph
A type if statistical graph used to compare parts of a whole.
Column
In a matrix, numbers stacked on top of each other in a vertical arrangement form a _________.
Dimensions
A description of a matrix by the number of rows and columns it has. The number of rows is always stated first. For example, a matrix with 3 rows and 5 columns has dimensions of 3 by 5.
Element
What each number in a matrix is called.
Histogram
A special kind of bar graph that displays the frequency of data that has been organized into equal intervals. The interval covers all possible values of data, therefore there are no spaces between the bars of graph.
Interquartile range
The range of the middle half of the data. The difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile.
Lower quartile (LQ)
The median of the lower half of a set of data.
Matrix
A rectangular arrangement of numerical data in rows and columns.
Mean
The sum of the numbers in a set of data divided by the number of pieces of data in the data set.
Measures of central tendency
Numbers or pieces of data that can represent the whole set of data.
Measures of variation
Numbers used to describe the distribution or spread of a set of data.
Median
The middle number in a set of data when the data are arranged in numerical order. If the data has an even number, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers.
Mode
The number(s) or item(s) that appear most often in a set of data.
Outlier
Data that is more than 1.5 times the interquartile range from the upper or lower quartiles.
Quartiles
Values that divide a set of data into four equal parts.
Range
The set of output values in a function.
Row
In a matrix, the numbers side by side horizontally form a _______.
Upper quartile (UQ)
The median of the upper quartile of a set of data.
