Conservation of mass |
During chemical reactions no atoms are created or destroyed. If mass seems to change there is a gas involved. |

Why could the mass change in a chemical reaction? |
If mass increases one of the reactants is a gas found in the air, and the products are solids liquids etc. If the mass decreases then all the reactants are solids liquids etc and at least one of the products is a gas. |

Exothermic and endothermic |
Exothermic means the reaction gives of energy. Endothermic means the reaction takes in energy from the surroundings. |

Test for carbon dioxide |
Bubble the gas through limewater. If it turns cloudy it is carbon dioxide. |

Test for hydrogen |
Put a lighted splint near the gas if it makes a squeaky pop sound it is hydrogen. |

Test for oxygen |
Put a glowing splint on the gas and it will relight if it is oxygen. |

Test for Chlorine |
Put damp blue litmus paper near the gas and if it is bleached white the gas is chlorine. |
