How to test for hydrogen, carbon dioxide, chlorine and oxygen (gases)

Hydrogen - insert burning splint, it will produce a pop sound

Oxygen - insert glowing splint, the splint will relight

Carbon Dioxide - Draw gas into pipet, bubble gas through limewater and repeat, limewater will go cloudy

Chlorine - put litmus paper, will turn white

Properties of Hydrocarbons

Viscosity (thickness) - more chains more viscous

Flamability - less chains more flammable

Boiling Point - more chains higher boiling point

Fractional distillation of crude oil

Heat crude oil up very high, crude oil boils so it evaporates and turns to vapour. The gas is then fed into a fractional distillation column and rises. Vapour condenses and becomes liquid when they reach theyre boiling point, Liquid removed. Very short chains and very long chains are removed straught away.

Cracking

Catalytic Cracking - Using a catalyst and high temperature

Steam Cracking - Using steam and high temperature

How to test for alkenes

Put alkene and bromine water toegether and shake, if the bromine water turns colourless its present

How to obtain Potable water

Find source of fresh water, pass water through filter bed and into streliser (chlorine, ozone, uv light)

Sea water is turned into potable by Desalination -distillation or reverse osmosis

Removing waste water

Sewage is screened by passing through mesh, water settles in large sedimentation tanks producing a liquid effluent and sludge which sinks. Sludge is removed and digested by anaerobic bacteria. Lqiquid effluent has air bubbled throguh it. Aerobic bacteria digest bad stuff. Then released.

Methods of extracting metals

Phytomining, plants are grown that contain metal compound. Plant is havrested and burned and ash has has concentrauon of metal

Bio leaching- bacteria are mxied with ore. produce leachate which has metal compound
