Active-activemode
Alink aggregation configuration in which both connections are activeas a matter of course. If one link fails, the other maintains theconnection.
Automaticfailover
Inthe event of a component failure, the ability of a redundantcomponent to immediately assume the duties of the failed component.
Baseline
Arecord of how a network operates under normal conditions (includingits performance, error statistics, utilization rate, and so on).Baselines are used for comparison when conditions change.
Cloudbackup
Atechnique in which data is backed up to a central location over theInternet
Discardedpackets
apacket that arrives at its destination but is then deliberatelyrejected because issues such as buffer overflow, latency, bottlenecks, or other forms of network congestion delayed the packetbeyond its usable time frame.
EF
(ExpeditedForwarding) One of two DiffServ forwarding specifications. EF assignseach data stream a minimum departure rate from a given node. Thistechnique circumvents delays that slow normal data from reaching itsdestination on time and in sequence. EF information is inserted inthe DiffServ field of an IPv4 packet.
Generator
Acomputer that is monitored by a syslog compatible application andthat issues event information.
Ghost
Aframe that is not actually a data frame, but rather an aberrationcaused by a device misinterpreting stray voltage on the wire. Unliketrue data frames, ghosts have an invalid pattern at the beginning ofthe frame pattern.
H.323
Asignaling protocol used to make a connection between hosts prior tocommunicating multimedia data. H.323 has largely been replaced bySIP, which is easier to use.
Hotspare
Aduplicate component already installed in a device that can assume theoriginal component’s functions in case that component fails.
Integrity
Theassurance that a network’s programs, data, services, devices, andconnections have not been altered without authorization. To ensure anetwork’s integrity, it must be protected from anything that mightrender it unusable, such as corruption, tampering, natural disasters, and viruses
IP-PBX
Aprivate switch that accepts and interprets both analog and digitalvoice signals (although some IP-PBXs do not accept analog lines). Itcan connect with both traditional PSTN lines and data networks. AnIP-PBX transmits and receives IP-based voice signals to and fromother network connectivity devices, such as a router or gateway.
Jabber
Adevice that handles electrical signals improperly, usually affectingthe rest of the network. A network analyzer will detect a jabber as adevice that is always retransmitting, effectively bringing thenetwork to a halt. A jabber usually results from a bad NIC.Occasionally, it can be caused by outside electrical interference.
Linkaggregation
Theseamless combination of multiple network interfaces or ports to actas one logical interface.
MEGACO
Aprotocol used between media gateway controllers and media gateways.Megaco is poised to replace MGCP on modern converged networks, as itsupports a broader range of network technologies, including ATM. Alsoknown as H.248.
MGCP
(MediaGateway Control Protocol) A protocol used for communication betweenmedia gateway controllers and media gateways.
PacketShaping
Softwarerunning on a router, multilayer switch, gateway, server, or even aclient workstation that can prioritize traffic according to protocol,IP address, user group, DiffServ flag (in an IP packet), VLAN tag, service, or application
Polling
Anetwork management application’s regular collection of data frommanaged devices.
Port5060 and 5061
Ports5060 and 5061, both on TCP and UDP, are associated to the SessionInitiation Protocol (SIP) by IANA
RTCP
(Real-timeTransport Control Protocol) A companion protocol to RTP that providesfeedback on the quality of a call or videoconference to itsparticipants.
SIP
(SessionInitiation Protocol) A set of Application layer signaling and controlprotocols for multiservice, packet-based networks. SIP is used tomake an initial connection between hosts for transferring multimediadata
Syslog
Astandard for generating, storing, and processing messages aboutevents on a system. Syslog describes methods for detecting andreporting events and specifies the format and contents of messages.
Videobridge
Hardwareor software that manages multiple audiovisual sessions so thatparticipants can see and hear each other.
Videostreaming
Aservice in which video signals are compressed and delivered over theInternet in a continuous stream so that a user can watch and listeneven before all the data has been transmitted.
Webcaching
Atechnique in which Web pages are stored at an ISP or locally, eitheron a host or network, and then delivered to requesters more quicklythan if they had been obtained from the original source.
Wireshark
Wiresharkis a Free and Open packet analyzer. It is used for networktroubleshooting, analysis, software and communications protocoldevelopment, and education.
