Remember, under the patients Bill of Rights they always have the option to decline medical treatment and to know what tests are being performed in them. If they ask, you must tell them. You do not however ever give them results, as you are not medically qualified to do so. Failure to give appropriate care is called negligence. Needle Guage |
The smaller the needles gauge the bigger the diameter of the needle. (I.e. 16 gauge is large bore and 23 gauge is small bore). Needles smaller than 23 gauge are not used for drawing blood because they can cause hemolysis ; the breaking or lying of red blood cells. These are then called hemolyzed red blood cells or a hemolyzed sample. |

Needle Disposal |
Never recap a needle whether it has a safety or not. |

The most critical mistake a phlebotomist can make is failing to properly identify the patient. Identify the patient. Name & Birthday |

Where should the tourniquet be tied? |
4-6 inches above the puncture site. |

Bevel |
The bevel faces upwards. |

How long should the tourniquet remain on? |
The tourniquet should remain on the entire length of the draw. It should be on no longer than 2 minutes WITHOUT a poke. |

Proper needle disposal |
The proper way to dispose of a needle is to safety cap it and put it into the sharps container immediately after withdrawing from the arm. |

Wrong patient specimen |
If a specimen has been collected from the wrong patient, immediately report the incident to your supervisor. |
