Benign Destructiveness
Pertains mostly to outbursts of destructive behavior that are activated by extraordinary circumstances and are NOT the result of unhealthy, life-thwarting character structure.
The problem of human existence
Is the problem of achieving a harmonious relatedness to the world that brings about union, harmony, and oneness while, simultaneously, preserving one's dignity, individuality, uniqueness, and distinctness.
"Character"
Character, for Fromm, is a mode of reaction, motivation, and orientation toward the world, other human beings, and oneself in the process of living. Character Structure is a dynamic psychological concept with deep existential implications. Character structure refers to a system of orientation and striving; hence, any given character structure will contain a rich set of individual character traits. Character traits underlie human behavior and must be inferred from it.
Malignant Destructiveness
Malignant destructiveness is character-bound. It involves destructive tendencies that are deeply rooted in the agent's character and are the result of malignant, life-thwarting mental processes.
