Morals - involve the practice of ethical theories and principles




ethics - set of principles that determine right and wrong.

3 Kinds of Theories related to ethics and their definition

1) meta ethics - the origins of theoretical concepts.

- focuses on universal truths. God's will or supreme being is foundation for all decisions. role of reason.


2) Normative - we control it. focuses on duties and rules that we follow


3) Applied - taking normative principles and applying them to specific unresolved controversial issues.

1) Cheating - Not playing by the rules

2) Gamesmanship- gray area between good sportsmanship and cheating


-utilizing legal tactics that are morally dubious and are designed to unsettle opponents


ex. trash talking, freeze timeout, coaches yelling at refs.


3- Sportsmanship - conducting yourself in a way that increases pleasure in sports. values fair play and adherence to the rules.

Define Unethical gambling and give examples

2 Rules in Violence and Sports


(Chapter 6)

Prospective rules - Prohibit particular types of actions during the game (ex spearing, cleating, high tick and chop blocks.


-Rules are in place for the safety of participants and to prevent athletes from intentionally harming one another


Sportsmanship Rules- instituted to encourage participants to play within the rules in a sportsmanlike manner.


-Put in place to promote ethical conduct and to prevent violent behavior (golfers self reporting, penalties for arguing a call in baseball, excessive celebration)



Definition of Hazing

Any actions which recklessly or intentionally engager the health or safety of a person for the purpose of initiation, admission, into or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a student organization.
