What is a flexible hose coupling pipe?

A flexible hose coupling is a flexible rubber hose used to connect air pipes between locomotives and vehicles-hose bags.

What is a coupling head?

A coupling head allows you to connect air pipes together on adjoining vehicles.

What is a rubber packing ring?

Coupling heads are provided with rubber packing rings, arranged so that when the coupling heads are united these rings are forced against each other to form an airtight seal.

What are the open and closed positions of an air pipe end cock?

Open - handle is in line with the pipe

Closed - handle is at right angles to pipe

How do you couple and inspect hoses?

When coupling the hoses together, the coupling heads are placed together almost at right angles.

They are then rotated so the projecting lug of one coupling head goes into the corresponding groove of the other.

Once coupled together and opening the corresponding end cocks it must be inspected for any air leaks.

If the hose coupling leaks, the driver/CW must inspect:

- the hose for cracks or cuts

- the thread being loose or damaged

- the projecting lugs being worn or damaged

- the rubber packing rings being damaged or missing

- apply moisture to the rubber rings if they appear in good order
