What is the main difference between the ailerons and
other flight controls?
The ailerons are driven by conventional control cables that are connected to hydraulic actuators (hydro-mechanical)while the rest of the flight controls are fly by wire. Fly by
Wire hydraulic actuators are called Power Control Units
(PCUs)
What are the two main parts of the Fly-by-Wire primary
flight control electronics?

not function?
Use the Backup Pitch Trim Switch on the center console
What will happen if using the backup Pitch Trim Switch
The autopilot will disengage
Can we disable Channel 1 or 2 of the HS-ACE
By using the Pitch Trim Sys 1 (2) guarded buttons on the
center console Trim Panel. The respective channel is disabled when pushed in (out is normal)
There are three Flight Control Mode guarded buttons.
What do they do?
When pushed in they put the associated flight system into the Direct Mode from the Normal Mode.

buttons?

Spoilers
Elevator
What three surfaces are shown on the Flight Control
System Status Annunciation?
RUDDER
ELEV LH
ELEV RH
There is an upper and lower rudder surface. What about
the elevators?
There is an inboard and outboard elevator surface.
On most airplanes it is somewhat important to know what flight controls are powered by which hydraulic systems
How can we find this information without referencing the
AOM.
Look at the Flight Controls Synoptic Page
You're looking at the Flap EICAS position indicator and it is showing amber. What does this mean?
The flaps are in transit. It will turn green when stable
What will the EICAS display if a surface jamming
occurs?
EICAS message plus an amber box and readout on the flap
display
What is the green takeoff band of the pitch trim
1 Degree to -6 degree
How many ACEs are installed
Three P-ACE
Two SF-ACE
One HS-ACE
What are the two basic flight control modes of operation
Normal
Direct
Basically, what happens in the Direct Mode
The FCM is removed from the control loop and the control
limits are set by hardware in the P-ACE.
What results in the Direct Mode activation
No airspeed input or higher level functions to the P-ACE.
Can the Direct Mode be selected by the pilot
Yes, by pressing the FLT Control Mode button in (out is
normal)
Which elevator surface does Hydraulic System 1 control?
Left Outboard Elevator
Which elevator surface does Hydraulic System 2 control?
Left & Right Inboard Elevator
Which elevator surface does Hydraulic System 3 control?
Right Outboard Elevator
If a jam occurs in one elevator what happens to the
system?
That one surface remains fixed and the pilot controls
remaining elevator surfaces
What is no longer available when in the Direct Mode
(elevator)?
Elevator Thrust Compensator
AOA Limiting
What is the Elevator Thrust Compensator Function
It moves the elevator +/-50 to compensate Engine Thrust
Changes.
Does the Feel system still work in the event of a jammed
control wheel resulting in separation?
Yes, each torque tube has it's own spring but the feel will be lighter (1/2 of normal loads)
After an elevator disconnect, the pilot of the non-jammed
side retains control over which elevator?
The on-side elevator
Does the trim switch activate the trim through the FCM
(Flight Controls Module)?
No, only the autopilot trim uses the FCM.
The priority of HS-ACE (Horizontal Stabilizer Actuator Control Electronics) trim commands is?
Backup
Captain
1st Officer
FCM (Autopilot Trim)
When does the trim function work at only half speed
Electrical Emergency following RAT deployment
Which hydraulic system powers the inboard aileron
PCUs?
Inboard Aileron PCU ..........Hydraulic System 2
Which hydraulic system powers the outboard
aileron PCUs?
Outboard Aileron PCU........Hydraulic System 3
In the event of an aileron jam followed by a disconnect
which side has normal feel and which side has no feel
Captain’s side has normal feel.
First Officer’s side has no feel.
There are inner, middle and outboard spoilers on each
wing. In the event of a disconnect due to jamming which side controls which spoilers?
Captain side controls Outboard Spoilers
First Officer’s side controls Middle Spoilers
The Inboard Spoilers are Disabled
What prevents aileron runaway trim
There is a 3 second timer that limits trim activation to no more than 3 seconds.
Which hydraulic systems power which rudder surfaces
Hydraulic System 1 ....Upper Rudder
Hydraulic System 3 .....Lower Rudder
How can the pilot disconnect a jammed rudder
He/She cannot
How does an electrical emergency with RAT deployed
affect the flaps and slats?
They will operate at only 1/2 speed
Which hydraulic systems power the ground spoilers
L2 & R2 (Outboard Ground Spoilers)........Hydraulic System 1

L1 & R1 (Inboard Ground Spoilers)...........Hydraulic System 2
Are speedbrakes available in the Direct Mode
No
When will the speedbrakes automatically retract
When selecting Flaps 3 on an Approach, or
After TLA of 600 on Go Around
This helps reduce pilot workload by applying elevator commands to reduce the pitch moments produced by increasing or decreasing thrust
Elevator Thrust Compensation
Elevator commands are limited to what degrees
+/- 5 degrees
How many channels is the H-ACE
