Type of foam used on standard wholetime appliances

AFFF(Aqueous Film Forming Foam)

Specifically AFFF-AR (Alcohol Resistant AFFF)

How to get AFFF to work through hosereels from a standard wholetime appliance

Get water to work - PTO, tank valve, high pressure, hose reel valve open, rev to operating pressure

Turn silver ‘hose reel flow’ wheel to 125 lpm - 1 or 3

Turn small red hosereel foam lever to ‘FOAM’

This will give 1% or 3% foam solution - normally use 3%

Branch operator should have the hosereel branch open with water flowing away from the fire until foam comes out - then point at fire

How to knock off and flush AFFF from hosereels on a standard wholetime appliance

Turn hosereel foam lever to ‘FLUSH’

Open ‘hosereel flow’ wheel to 125 lpm - 3 (this will flush the foam out as quickly as possible)

Operate hosereels that have had foam through them until clear water is running through

Turn ‘hosereel flow’ wheel and hosereel foam lever to OFF

Knock-off pump

How to get AFFF to work through main deliveries and hosereels

Get water to work

Move lever to tank to inductor

Move RTP to desired setting (15 lpm per delivery in use for standard branches or 7.5 lpm for FB5X)

Branches to be aimed away from fire and operated until foam solution comes out before using on fire

How to knock off and flush after using AFFF through main deliveries and hosereel

Turn foam lever back to horizontal ‘pick up to tank’ position

Open RTP wheel all the way to flush foam out as quickly as possible

Open branches on all deliveries/lines used until clear water running through then knock off

Close RTP back to zero

What does RTP stand for?

Round the Pump Proportioner

Difference between the

High Pressure Foam System

and the

Round The Pump Proportioner Foam System

on a standard wholetime appliance

High Pressure foam system adds AFFF to the High Pressure system only, so foam only comes from the hosereels.

The RTP adds AFFF to the whole pump, so foam comes from all deliveries and hosereels

How much AFFF should be inducted for a 3% foam solution using standard branches?

(Midmatic , ultimatic, smoothbore)

15 lpm per delivery/branch in use

Example: For 1 ultimatic and 1 midmatic branch in use simultaneously- turn the RTP to 30 lpm

How much AFFF should be inducted for a 3% foam solution using the FB5X branch?

7.5 lpm per FB5X branch in use

What settings does the High Pressure Foam Hosereel Flow silver wheel/knob have?

125 lpm - 1%, 3%, 6%

80 lpm - 1%, 3%, 6%

What settings does the RTP foam flow regulator (silver knob/wheel) have?

15 lpm increments from 0 lpm up to 120 lpm

Capacity of the foam tank on a standard wholetime appliance

70 litres

What is the difference between ‘primary aspirated’ foam and ‘secondary aspirated foam’ ?

Back (Definition)

Recommended minimum application rate for finished foam AFFF on spills/bunds

4 lpm per m2 for 15 minutes

Product names of foam concentrate used on standard AFFF appliances and CAFS appliances

Standard AFFF - Moussol

CAFS - Sthamex

What does ‘aspirated’ mean in relation to firefighting foam?
