What are the characteristics of the Pin Index Safety System?
- E cylinders & smaller
- high pressure (greater than 200psi) - yoke & pin connections - Oxygen 2-5 position - Air 1-5 position - CO2 1-6 position |
What are the characteristics of the American Standard Safety System?
- larger than E cylinders
- high pressure - nipple & threaded nut |
What are the characteristics of the Diameter Index Safety System?
- low pressure (less than 200psi)
- all connections are after the regulator - threaded nut & nipple |
What are the flammable cylinder gases?
- ethylene
- cyclopropane |
What are the non-flammable cylinder gases?
- nitrogen
- CO2 - Helium |
What are the cylinder gases that support combustion?
- Oxygen
- Oxygen mixtures - Nitrous oxide |
What are the Oxygen mixtures?
- helium/oxygen (heliox)
- oxygen/CO2 (carbogen) - oxygen/nitrogen - oxygen/nitrous oxide |
What are the qualities of oxygen?
- colorless
- odorless - tasteless - fractional distillation |
What is the atomic weight of oxygen? molecular weight?
16g; 32g
What is the critical temperature of oxygen?
- neg. 118 C or neg.181 F at 49.7atm
- above this temperature, it cannot remain a liquid |
What are the cylinder markings found on the front of a cylinder?
- DOT-3AA 2015psi (these are DOT specifications & service pressure
- serial # - ownership markings - manufacturers mark |
What are the cylinder markings found on the backs of cylinders?
- original hydrostatic testing
- specifications - retest dates - inspectors mark & specifications |
How much pressure are cylinders filled to?
- cylinders are filled to 5/3 maximum pressure every 5-10 years (hydrostatic testing)
What does the DOT marking on a cylinder refer to?
- insures that the tank conforms w/ DOT specifications for compressed gas cylinders
What does the 3AA marking on a gas cylinder refer to?
- indicates grade of steel (3AA required for medical)
What does the 2015psi marking on a gas cylinder refer to?
- maximum filling pressure (may be exceeded by 10%)
How much can pressure can a gas cylinder be overfilled by?
10% to hold 2200psi
What does the duration of flow in minutes equal?
duration of flow in minutes= tank pressure*tankfactor/liter flow
What are the tank factors for O2 duration of flow?
E= 0.28
G= 2.41 H= 3.14 |
What are tank factors used to calculate?
- absolute duration times; however, in practice a safety factor must be utilized to insure no interruptions in gas therapy to the patient
What are the E, G, & H cylinder capacities?
E= 616 liters @ 2200psig (22ft3)
G= 5308 liters @ 2200psig (187ft3) H= 6908 liters @ 2200psig (244ft3) |
What is important to know about cylinder handling?
- keep in carrier or stand
- no flames/smoking nearby - proper technique in attaching regulators |
What is the proper technique for attaching regulators?
- remove cap
- turn gas on momentarily (away from people) "cracking" the cylinder (ALWAYS ANNOUNCE LOUDLY!) - place and tighten regulator (at eye level) - turn on gas - adjust flow - bleed off pressure when not in use |
How should a cylinder be stored?
- store w/ cap on to prevent breaking stem (large cylinders)
How should a cylinder be tested?
- every 5-10 years
- water displacement measured to check for expansion with 5/3 maximum pressure |
What are the 3 general types of gaseous bulk systems?
- standard
- fixed cylinders - trailer units (2200psi) |
What are the characteristics of a standard gaseous bulk system?
- large H or K size cylinders banked inot a manifold system
- primary bank - reserve bank (automatically switches to this when primary system drops to a preset lower pressure limit |
What happens when 6 or more cylinders are manifolded together in a standard gaseous bulk system?
- alarms are activated when reserve switches on or malfunction occurs; cylinders are replaced as needed
What are the characteristics of fixed cylinders in gaseous bulk systems?
- large bank of permanently fixed cylinders (up to 75)
- refilled on site by a liquid O2 truck that converts the liquid into gas to fill tanks |
What are the characteristics of trailer units (2200psi) in a gaseous bulk system?
- very large cylinders mounted on trailers towed to a central location for connection
- when low or in need of maintenance, replace w/ fresh trailer |
