What is the ovary in terms of glands? |
It is an endocrine gland. |
Describe the stages of follicular development? |
Primordial --> Primary --> Secondary --> Mature |
What cells secrete the follicular fluid? At what stage is this produced? |
Granulosa cells and cumulus. Transition from primary to secondary follicle. |
What do theca cells produce? What then occurs to this substance? |
Produce androgens, which are transported across the basal laminae to be aromatized to oestrodiol, acts back to stimulate folliculogenisis. |
How many waves of follicles is produced ? How many ovulated? |
3 waves and only one is ovulated. |
Characteristics of a atresia follicle? |
Pycnotic nucleus, glassy membrane and granulosa layer becomes detached and bited |
How does the oocyte leave the follicle? |
Rapid accumulation of fluid, build up of pressure. Inflammatory response |
What colour is the Corpus luteum usually? |
Yellow |
What is the corpus luteum? |
Remnant of Ovulated follicle that produces progesterone. |
What do interstitial glands do? What species are they not present? |
Secretes steroids. Cows and ruminants. |
Were is the mucosa most folded in the oviduct? |
In the ampulla |
Were is the lumen in the oviduct largest? |
Infindibulum decreases in size in ampulla and isthmus |
What type of epithelia is present in the oviduct ? Cows and sows? |
Simple columnar but in the pig and cow is pseudostratified. |
What to cells are present in the oviduct? |
Ciliated columnar cells intermingled with non ciliated secretory cells |
What do the secretory cells produce? |
Substrate as oocyte moves through the oviduct. |
What happens to the cells of the oviduct in the luteal phase? |
Height and activity cells increases during the luteal phase. |
What are the 3 layers of the uterus? |
Outer Perimetrium Myometrium Endometrium |
How many layers of muscle is in the muscularis propria of the myometrium? |
Several |
Another name for the perimetrium? |
Tunica serosa |
What histological change does oestrogen induce in the reproductive tract of the female? |
Increase length and size of cilia. |
What does P4 do? |
Stimulates secretory activity regulates contactions and on its own leads to regression of tubular epithelium. |
What happens during anoestrus? |
Low hormone level, glands regress, low epithelium. |
What does E2 do? |
Stimulates epithelium growth and proliferation. |
During proestrus what occurs under the influence of? |
Mucosal thickening, stromal proliferation, increased vascularisation, gland proliferation and endometrial oedema. High levels of E2. |
What happens during oestrus? |
Cells proliferate, hyperplasia, some haemorrhage. |
What occurs at dioestrus? |
High P4. Change to secretory from proliferative. Histotroph produced. |
What is present in the proestrus bitch smear? |
Lots of erythrocytes and cornified cells. |
What is present in the oestrus bitch smear? |
Extensive cornification and few erythrocytes. |
What happens to the cow during oestrus? |
Goblet cells increase. |
