Francis Cecil Sumner

First Black man to earn a PHD in u.s.

Inez Beverly Prosser

First black lady! Found that African American children in segregated schools had higher self esteem.

G. Stanley Hall

1st american psych research lab. Did it in the US before it was cool. 1st american psych journal, established and was 1st president of the APA. Acted like it was no big deal. Mostly in education. Many famous students.

Titchner

British, elitist. Bearded. Mentored women but refused to let them join his bad ass "Experimentalists Society." saying women were too pure to smoke. Structuralism. Focused on the conscious experience.

Titchner VS Wundt

-Wundt Wanted to explain experience, Titchner wanted to describe it. Explaining is for biologists.

-Titchner's introspection was more complex. he trained people to remove their stimulus error when describing conscious experience.

-Titchner wanted to break the experience down to elements

Darwinism

Darwinism reshaped the scientific zeitgeist. It spurned functionalism by making psychologists focus on the FUNCTION of consciousness, not the structure! byby structuralism. How does the mind help us adapt? Does psych have real life applications?? Increased the study of individual differences. Sociobiology, comparative biology

Jean Lamarck

thought of evolution. though it was a little off. thought offspring would have extra-developed limbs if their parents used that limb frequently in order to survive. "Inheritance of Characteristics." Giant giraffes.

Sir Francis Galton

Darwin's cousin. Almost as dope. Hyper-Genius. Had it all... except the beard. 3 Major Psych developments:

1. Eugenics

2. Statistical methods, mean, standard deviation, co-relations, regression to the mean

3. Implemented mental tests

Effect of Prayer?

Galton found no change in people, even highly religious church members, who prayed for health, weather, or even convenience in their everyday lives

George John Romanes

Anecdotal Method: using observations on research animals to draw conclusions about human behavior. humans are subject to bias, but animals will do their natural thing.. always. introspection by analogy!

C. Lloyd Morgan

Romanes' successor.

Law of Parsimony- animal behavior cannot be attributed to a higher intelligence, when a lower process is sufficient to explain the behavior.

Variability Hypothesis

The notion that men have a greater range of mental and physical prowess, both high and low, when compared to women.

Hellen Wooley, Leta Hollingworth

-Woolley changed legal policy concerning child labor, and experimentally challenged the notion that there were inherent differences in the motor and mental skills between men and women

-Hated the confines of womenhood in society. empirically tested the Variability Hypothesis and refuted it.

Herbet Spencer

rockstar. coined 'survival of the fittest.' Extended evolutionary theory to society. rich people liked how he reaffirmed their status. Synthetic Philosophy: evolution can explain knowledge and experience.

William James

Father of US psychology. Pragmatism: if an idea works, it is valid. Stream of consciousness: Consciousness is always flowing, any attempt to slow it, reduce it to elements, or re-experience it will fail. instincts can change with experience. Primary Memory: immidiate past and recent consciousness. Secondary memory: previous events that are not part of your current process or attention.

3 piece self

James' Theory. Material self: everything we call our own. clothing, house, etc. Social Self: recognition we get from other people. Spiritual Self: our inner or subjective being

3 Tenets of Functionalism (james Angell)

1. Functionalism is the study of mental operations, not mental elements (structuralism)

2. conciousness is a utilitarian entity that mitigates the needs of the organism and the demands of the environment.

3. Functionalism concerns the pschyo-physical relation. recognizes all mind-body functions and does not distinguish the two from eachother.

Cattell, Mental Test. Binet, intelligence test

mental test: Test motor skills and sensory capabilities. Very simple in nature. Thought motor function could measure intelligence. BOTH tests dealt with elementary sensorimotor measurements. Intelligence test: tests memory, cognitive function, attention, and imagination to better understand the mind

Lightner Witmer

Founder of Clinical psych. Opened the very first Psychology Clinic to asses and treat learning disabilities in children. Offered the first college course in Clinical Psych. Developed Diagnostic and Treatment approaches, as there were none before him.
