What is the nutrient depletion/ retention of thiazides?
Shown to deplete:
• Folic acid • Potassium • Magnesium • Zinc • Sodium • Co Q10 • Vitamin B2 Shown to increase/retention: Calcium Maybe affected: • Vitamin D • Phosphorus |
What are the side effects of furosemide?
• LOW: K+, Ca++, Mg++
• ELEVATED: blood glucose, uric acid • In some ptx: OTOTOXICITY (tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss, ear pain) |
What are the side effects of thiazide?
• 70% of ptx experience hypokalemia (HT palpitations) and hyperuricemia (gout)
• 10% experience hyperglycemia; increased serum lipid concentration (increased LDL and TG) • Serum K+ must be carefully monitored in ptx predisposed to arrhythmias (LVH, IHD, CHF) as they may increase incidence of sudden cardiac death • CI : as hypertensive treatment for diabetics / ptx with elevated cholesterol/ pregnancy / lactation |
