What are physical and chemical changes, the differences between them? (core)
The change that takes place in a substance by heating it, adding water to it, or mixing it, is either a physical change or a chemical one.
What are the differences between elements, compounds and mixtures? (core)
An element contains only one kind of atom, a compound contains atoms of different elements joined together and a mixture contains more than one substance.
What is a mixture? (extented)
A mixture contains more than one substance, the substances are mixed together, not chemically combined.
What is an element? (extented)
An Element contains only one kind of atom.
What is a compound? (extented)
A compound contains atoms of different elements joined together.
What is the structure of an atom in terms of electrons and a nucleus containing protons and neutrons? (core)
Atoms consist of a nucleus and a cloud of electrons that move round the nucleus. The nucleus is itself a cluster of two kinds of particles, protons and neutrons.
What are the relative charges and approximate relative masses of protons, neutrons and electrons? (core)
The mass of protons and neutrons is 1 unit, the mass of an electron is almost nothing. Protons have a positive charge (1+), neutrons have no charge and electrons have a negative charge (1-).
What is the proton number? (core)
The proton number is the number of protons in an atom.
What is the nucleon number? (core)
The nucleon number is the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
What are isotopes? (core)
Isotopes are atoms of the same element, with different numbers of neutrons.
