What is the difference of self vs non-self?
Self=normal body tissues
Non-self= cells\molecules that immune system not exposed to during maturation |
What is innate immune system and some of its components?
Immune cells and tissues in place before pathogen present
ie Macrophages, Tight junctions, complements, Granular cells |
Can the innate immune system generate memory?
No memory is made, always same response time and efficiency
What are the 2 types of barrier defenses of the innate immune system?
Physical\ mechanical= TJ's, Mucous, tears, saliva
Microbial ie gut flora out competes foreign pathogens |
How does surface epithelia contribute to innate immunity?
Tight junctions and
Chemical= acid secretion of stomach to anti bacterial NZ(lysozyme) to AntiBac peptides ie defensins(α and β) |
What cells utilize alpha defensins?
alpha: in small intestine
neutrophils, NK cells beta: most epithelial surfaces |
What must bacteria do to infect a host?
Colonize or cross epithelial barrier
Is the response of the innate immune system specific? What types of things are recognized? using what receptor?
NO, very general response
LPS, mannose PRR's- pattern recognition receptors |
