How do I round numbers?

When rounding, write to what amount you are being asked to round to underneath the amount you are given.

For example-

133 333

100 000

You were asked to round to the nearest 100 000 and now you know you round from the 1 using the 3 next to it.

What are multiples?

Multiples of a given number are those that can be divided wholly by that number and appear on that numbers ‘times tables’.

For example,

Multiples of 5 are 5,10,15,20,25,30,35

What are factors?

Factors are the numbers that divide wholly into a given number.

For example, 6 is a factor of 12 because 12\6 = 2.

When finding factors of a number, start at 2 and work upwards until you reach over half of that given number you are finding factors of.

Prime Numbers

Prime numbers are numbers that can only be divided by itself and 1. The only factors they have are themselves and 1.

1 is not a prime number!

How do I find prime factors?

Start by finding the lowest factor.

For example, the lowest factor of 24 is 2. You would then write 2 x 12. Then you find the lowest factor of 12, which is 2. You would then write 2 x 6. The lowest factor of 6 is 2 x 3. Then you count the factors - you used 2 three times, so that’s 2 (with a small 3 above it) x 3.

How many centimetres in a metre?

There are 100 centimetres in s metre.

Think how many legs a centipede has. 100.

How long is a century? 100 years.

So how many centimetres in a metre?

How millimetres are there in a centimetre?

10mm in 1cm

Think about when you use a ruler, how many mms were there between cms?

How many millimetres in a metre?

1000mm in a metre

How many legs does a millipede have?

How do I find perimeter?

Find the perimeter by finding the length of all the sides. If the length of a side isn’t shown, you can calculate the length by working from those lengths given.

How do find the circumference?

Type into your calculator 2 x pi x the radius of the circle shown.

The radius is the length halfway across a circle.

The diameter is the whole length so radius is half of this.

A pirate ordering two pies would say 2 pie arrrrr!!!

How do I find the area of a shape partitioned into two parts?

Draw a line splitting the two. Label one of them A and the other B, etc...

Find the area of both and then add them together to find the whole area.

How do I find the circumference of a semi circle?

Find the circumference of the whole circle, half it, then add the diameter.

How do I find the area of triangle?

The base of the triangle x the height of the triangle and divide that answer by two.

How do I find the area of a circle?

Times pi by the radius squared (times by itself).

For example, if the radius is 5cm. Then the area would be 5x5 = 25cm and then 25cm x pi.

Convert currency

To change pounds into different currency x by the selling rate e.g £1 x €1.35 = £1.35

To change back you divide by the rate e.g

€2.00/£1.35= £1.48

Scale diagrams

Scale diagrams use ratios to show representation

E.g 1:100 = 1m, 1cm or 1mm is actually 100 x bigger

E.g (2) the scale of a road map is 1cm to 10km distance between the towns are 2hrs

1cm (1hour)= 10km

2x10=20km

Temperature

Convert Celsius in Fahrenheit

Convert Fahrenheit in Celsius

X Celsius temperature by 9 5th and + 32

- 32 from Fahrenheit temperature and x 5 9th

9/5th is involved in these equations

Ratios

What is a ratio

How two or more quantities compare with each other

What must you do when increasing or decreasing ratios

Each part of the ratios should be multiplied or divided by the same number to ensure the ratio remains the same

e.g 70 sweets in a jar and the ratio of red and yellow sweets is 3:2. How many sweets are there?

Find out how many parts (3+2=5)

1 part = 70/5=14

X each ratio by the value of one part 3 x 14 = 42

2x14= 28

28+42= 70

When you write ratio, always write it in the order given

How do I work out the difference?

When working out the difference, take the higher value number and subtract the lower value number from that amount.

For example, the difference between 29 degrees and 19 degrees would be 29-19, which is equal to 10.

What does the little number above a number mean?

It means squared if that number is 2. This means you timed that number by itself once.

If that small number is a 3 then that means cubed, which means you times it by itself 2 times.

Etc if it’s a 4 or higher...

How do you work out the mean

Add all numbers together and divide by how many there are

Work out the range

Take the smallest number away from the biggest
