What does it mean for microbes to be ubiquitous?
For a microbe to be ubiquitous, it means that microbes are located everywhere.
What is meant by diversity with respect to organisms?
Diversity refers to the variability of all organisms.
What events, discoveries, or inventions were the most significant to microbiology and why?
Leeuwenhoek's invention of the microscope, which allowed us to see and study microorganisms (1600s'). Redi's experiment, which showed that complex organisms (animals) could not reproduce via abiogenesis. Other worthy mentions; Jalbot's, Shultze and Schwann's test as well as Pasteur's experiment helped pave the way for sterilization methods. Pasteur, along with Koch, also provided large contributions regarding research of infection and pathogens.

Explain how microbiologists use the scientific method to develop theories and explanations for microbial phenomena.
The introduction of the scientific method allowed scientists to develop answers using an experimental system in which conclusions would not be developed via personal bias or beliefs.
Explain how microbes are classified into groups according to evolutionary relationships, provided with standard scientific names and identified by specific characteristics.
Microbes are classified via;
-Phylogeny -Evolution -Morphology (structure) -Psysiology (function) -Genetics (Inheritance) |
What are some sources of "new" infectious diseases?
1) Ignorance-there might be diseases that have been around a long time and we just didn't notice them until recently 2) Rapid evolution of bacteria
What is the primary trait that separates prokaryotes from eukaryotes?
The presence of a nucleus: not present in prokaryotes, present in eukaryotes.
Which microbiologist developed standard microbiology lab tests?
Robert Koch
What is the process that involves the deliberate alteration of an organism's DNA?
Recombinant DNA
What part was absent from Leewuenhock's microscope?
A condenser.
Scientist responsible for laying the "spontaneous generation" theory to rest (not who you think it is)
Louis Pasteur.
Correct order of taxonomic categories
1-Species
2-Genus 3-Family 4-Order 5-Class 6-Phylum 7-Kingdom 8-Domain |
