Nail Grooves

The tracks, on either side of the nail, that the nail moves on as it grows

Grooves

Nail Walls

Folds of skin on either side of the nail groove

Walls

Nail Body/Nail Plate

Visible nail from root to free edge

Look at your nail

Cuticle

Loose and pliable overlapping skin around the nail

Hyponychium

Skin under the free-edge

Hypo = Under

Eponychium

Cuticle that overlaps the lunula at the base of the nail (water tight seal)

Lunula

1/2 moon shape at the base of the nail (reflection of light)

Lunu (moon)

Nail Bed

Area on which the nail body/plate rests. Nerves and blood vessels.

Bed

Perionychium

Skin that touches, overlaps and surrounds the nail/sides.

Peri = Perimeter

Nail Root

Attached to the matrix inside the mantle

Root

Nail Matrix

Active tissue that generates cells, which harden as they move outward from the root

Matrix = Mother

4 Appendages of the skin

1. Hair

2. Nails

3. Sebaceous Gland (Oil)

4. Sudoriferous Gland (Sweat)

Mantle

Pocket - like structure that holds the root and matrix

Earth mantle holding layer

Free Edge

Part of the nail that extends past the tip of the finger/toe

Free

Metacarpals

5 long skinny bones of the hand / palm

Meta = After carpals (wrist bones)

Metatarsals

5 long skinny bones of foot

Tar (step on it)

Phalanges

14 Bones of the toes and fingers

Carpals

8 bones of the wrist

Radius

Long bone of the lower arm on the thumb side

Tarsals

7 Bones of the ankle, mid foot, heel

Humorous

Large long bone of the upper arm

Ulna

Long bone of the lower arm on the little finger side

Patella

Knee Cap

Femur

Thigh Bone

Three types of muscle tissue

Origin, Belly, Insertion

Three types of muscle tissue

Origin, Belly, Insertion

The Origin

Non moving (fixed) portion of muscle attached to bones or other fixed muscle. Skeletal muscle is muscle attached to the bone.

The Belly

Midsection of muscle

The Belly

Midsection of muscle

Insertion

Muscle joined to movable attachments

Abductor Muscles

Stretches over the fingers and separates them

Adductor Muscle

Stretches over the fingers and draws them together

DD- draws them together

Flexor Muscle

In mid forearm on the inside of the arm. It bends wrist and closes the fingers.

Extensor Muscle

Mid forearm on the outside of arm it straightens the fingers and wrists

Sensory Nerve (Afferent Nerve)

Carry messages to the brain and spinal cord

Motor Nerve (Efferent Nerve)

Carry messages from the brain to the muscles and glands

Mixed Nerves

Contain both afferent and efferent axons, and thus conduct both incoming sensory information and outgoing muscle commands in the same bundle.

Digital Nerve

Extends into the fingers of the hand

Radial Nerve

Extends down the thumb side of the arm into the back of the hand

Ulnar Nerve

Extends down the little finger side of the arm into the palm of the hand

Ligaments

Connective tissue that hold together the 8 small bones of carpals
