what’s a modem |
It’s a device that converts a computers digital signal into an analogue signal for transmission over an existing telephone line fyc |
Function of a modem |
To allow computers to connect to networks over long distances using the existing telephone networks |
What does ADSL Stand for |
Asymmetric digital subscriber line |
What’s a hub. |
Its a hardware device that can have number of computer connected to them. They are often used to connect a number of devices to form a LAN. |
Function of a Hub |
Is to take any data packet received at one of its ports and broadcast it to every computer in the network |
What’s a switch |
They connect a number of devices together to form a lan |
Difference between a switch and a lan |
The switch checks the data packet received and works out it’s destination address and sends the data to the appropriate computers only |
What’s Mac and it’s used |
Media access control adrenaline. Data packets sent to switches will have a MAC address indentify the source of the data and identify who the device which should receive the data |
What’s a bridge |
Devices used to connect one LAN to anotheR LAN that uses the same protocol |
What’s a router |
This enables data packets to be routed between the different networks, such as joinS A lan to a WAN |
How does a router work |
When a router receives a packet of data, it checks its the destination IP address. The router is then able to send the data packet to the appropriate switch and it will be then delivered using the MAC destination address . If the MAC address doesn’t match any device on the network , it passes onto another switch on the same network until the appropriate device is found |
What’s gateway |
This is a network point that acys as the entrante to another network |
What’s NIC |
This is needed to allow a device to connect to a network |
Adv of network cable 2 |
1) faster data transfer rate 2) can be more secure than wireless communications networks |
What’s IP |
Internet protocol |
Difference between IP and MAC |
MAC Adress is a unique number that identifies a device connected to the internet. While IP gives the location of a device on the internet to allow the lan to connect to the internet, becoming a Wan |
Uses to Bluetooth |
1) when transferring data between two or more devices that are very close together 2) when the speed of data is not necessarily 3) for low band with applications |
What’s a LAN |
Number of computer and devices that are connected to hubs or switches. One of the hubs or switches will be usually connected to a router and a modem |
Adv of LAN |
1) sharing of resources 2) ease communication between users 3) network administrator to control and monitor all aspects of the network |
Disadv of LAN |
1) easier spread of voters 2) printer queues developing 3) slower access to extranl networks 4) if the main server breaks down all the network stops |
What’s a WANand uses |
Used where computer are situated long distances from each other geographically |
What’s WLAN |
Wireless local area network. Provide wireless communication over short distances using radio waves |
What’s an AP and it’s use |
Access point. These are devices which are connected into the wired network at fixed locations. Because of the limited range, most LANS need several APS to permit wireless communications. AP receives and transmits data between the WLAN and the wired structure |
How do users access wlan |
Through wireless lan adapters that are built into the devices |
Adv of WLAN |
1) all computer can access the same services from anywhere within the range of the AP’s 2)safety improvements 3) adding new computers are easy and cheaper than buying LANs |
Disadvantages of WLAN |
1) problems with the interface may affect the signal 2) data transfer slower that LANs 3) security is a big uses since anyways can pick the signal so encryption must be used |
Adv of phones |
1) portable 2) easier to be moved that the other mobile phones |
Disadv of mobile phones |
1) expensive to use without WiFi 2) hard to type due to small keyboard 3) not all websites are user friendly on mobile phone so they can’t be access 4) smaller screen which makes it harder to type |
Adv of laptops |
1) more mobile than desktops 2) easier to type in a keyboard that in a mobile phone 3) easier to navigate than mobile phones |
Disadvantages of laptops |
1) require expensive dongles to access phone 2) access speed is not as quick due to processors used in laptops 3) not as large as a desktop |
Advantages of desktops computers |
1) faster processors than other devices 2) more stable and reliable internet connection since they use wired system 3) all webs page are accessible to to large screen 4) use of pointing devices which makes navigation much easier |
Disadvantages of desktop |
1) not portable 2) require expensive dongles to access phone network |
Adv of laptops |
1) more mobile than desktops 2) easier to type in a keyboard that in a mobile phone 3) easier to navigate than mobile phones |
Whats DPA |
These are designed to protect individuals and to prevent incorrect data being stored. Mainly to protect the right of the individual about whome data is obtained |
What’s fax and how does it work |
this a standard machine fax machine which allows data to be sent to another fax machine using a normal telephone line. The user places the document in the fax machine trays lifts and dials the fax numbers of the recipient and then presses send |
What’s electronic faxing |
This requires a network for the fax to be sent |
Adv of electronic faxing |
1) costs are reduced -: no need to buy a fax machine 2) transfers are encrypted 3) no issue of busy signal |
Difference between email and faxes |
Online faxing is associated with an email address and a fax number |
Disadvantages of laptops |
1) require expensive dongles to access phone 2) access speed is not as quick due to processors used in laptops 3) not as large as a desktop |
Advantages of desktops computers |
1) faster processors than other devices 2) more stable and reliable internet connection since they use wired system 3) all webs page are accessible to to large screen 4) use of pointing devices which makes navigation much easier |
Disadvantages of laptops |
1) not portable 2) require expensive dongles to access phone network |
Should the internet be policied ? (4) |
1) it will help prevent illegal material to be published 2) discovery of dangerous info can be found and have serious consequences 3) prevent young children to be exposed to undersisable websites 4) prevent incorrect info to be posted |
Why the internet shouldn’t be polished |
1) expensive to police all websites 2) it can go against freedom of information 3) laws already exist to prevent illegal material on the internet 4) material published is available from other sources |
Main aspects to consider when using a search engine (3) |
1) realisability of information 2) undesirability of certain website 3) security issues |
What’s reliability of information |
1) info is likely to be up to date 2) easier to get info form websites 3) vast amount on info on the internet that is easier to locate than using books 4) info could be incorrect 5) risk of info overload as making it difficult to find the relevant info |
Undesirability of certainwebsufd |
1) risk of finding undesirable websites 2) risk of connections to websites which ain’t genuine |
What happens when someone approaches passport control at the airport |
1) the passports contraining the photograph is placed face down on the reader 2) microchip embedded in the page is read by the readied and the facial image is also scanned 3) the owner of the passport looks up at the digital camera and a photograph is taken 4) the photograph is converted through an AD so it can be compared to the scanned facial image 5) data read from the microchip is also compared to the data stored in the central database |
Features of traditional faxes |
1) more likely to be intercepted since the document needs to be printed out and many people are able to access the info 2) poor quality 3) if the telephone line is bus, it can delay in sending fax 4) slow process of many documents have to be sent as the document as to be scanned first |

A communication method that uses both video and sound. This is carried out in real time |
Name software used in video conferencing and explain |
1) Echo cancellation software. Allows talking to take place in trial time and permits synchronisation of communication. 2) webcams and microphone software drivers. This is made to ensure that the webcams and microphone transmit their images and sounds to the other related |
Disadv of web con |
1) delays in telking 2) based on a good internet connection 3) costly as training is needed 4) expensive to purchase material 5) jerking images |
Whats audio conference |
This is the meeting held between people using audio equipment |
How does the communication over VoIP work |
The organiser creates a group of people to take part in the conference call. The group is created by dragging and dropping user names and telephone names into the group. When the conference is about to fLe place |
