Introduction |
It is the third cranial nerve. Supplies the intraocular and extraocular muscles of eyeball. As it is a somatic motor nerve, it is in series with 4th, 6th and 12th cranial nerves and also the ventral roots of spinal nerves. |
|
Functional components |
1. General somatic efferent- muscles of eyeball and it's movements 2. General visceral efferent/Parasympathetic- constriction of pupil and accommodation 3. General somatic afferent- proprioceptors from the extraocular muscles to mesencephalic nucleus of V. |
|
Nuclei |
RCVIDE - SLMIIS |
|
Connections |
1. Afferent- central connections Cerebral cortex (area 4, 6, 8), Corona radiata, genu of internal capsule, occulomotor nuclei. 2. Efferent- peripheral connections a. Muscles of eyeball b. Collateral connections- PCMC |
|
Origin |
Oculomotor nucleus- ventromedial part of central grey matter of midbrain at the level of Superior colliculus. |
|
Connections |
Pyramidal tracts- supranuclear pathway of nerve Pretectal nucleus- for light reflex Tectobulbar tract- visuoprotective reflex 4th, 6th and 8th nuclei- for coordination of eye movements
