How do you spot a run on sentence? |
A run on sentence is one that contains more than one main clause that is improperly joined together (e.g. just a comma between the two) |
How do you fix a run on sentence? |
With connecting words or connecting punctuation. |
What is a connecting word? |
Word that connects two clauses. Two types can be used to connect: 1. Comma coordinating conjunction (e.g. and, but, or, for nor, yet) aka neutral referee that allows both clauses to coexist 2. Subordinator, which reduces one of the clauses to a subordinate to coexist (because, although, before, after, since) |
What are the major connecting punctuation? |
Comma, semicolon, colon, dash |
When should you not use a comma? |
To separate non essential modifiers. They can be used for non essential modifiers. They cannot by themselves connect two sentences. |
When can you use a semicolon? |
To connect two closely related statements. Each statement must be able to stand alone as an independent sentence. |
When can you use a colon? How is it different than a semi colon? |
A colon provides further explanation for what comes before it. Whatever needs explanation should be placed as close to the colon as possible. A semicolon connects independent clauses and the second does not explain the first. |
When can you use a dash? |
It's a flexible punctuation. Can be used as an emphatic comma, semicolon or colon. |
How can you tell a countable vs an uncountable noun? |
Countable = can be counted as one onion, two onion, etc and it has a plural form (onions) Uncountable = can't be counted as one patience, two patience, three patience and does not have a plural form (patiences) |
What are some examples of quantity adjectives that are used for countable vs uncountable nouns? |
Countable = few, fewer, number, many, numerous Uncountable = much, little, less, amount, great, greater |
What words should you use to relate two things vs three or more things? |
Use comparative forms to compare 2 things or ppl (better, worse, more, less). Use superlative forms to compare 3 or more things (best, worst most, least). Also for two you use between and for three or more you use among. |
What's the difference between the number of vs a number of? |
The number of is singular vs a number of is plural |
What's the difference between the numbers of vs a number of? |
Should avoid the numbers of as it's almost always incorrect. |
When should you use increase and decrease vs greater and less? |
Increase and decrease express the chance of one thing over time. Greater and less signal a comparison between two things. |
What should you watch out for in sentences with the words increase and decrease? |
Redundancy e.g. the price of silver fell by more than 35% decrease. |
