what is the common name for the family Metastrongylidea?
lungworms
where, in general, are metastrongyles found?
respiratory system, some affect vascular/nervous system
what, in general, is the lifecycle of metastrongyles?
life cycle direct or indirect (snails, slugs, earthworms)
where are Metastrongylus species found?
bronchi of pigs
what is the morphology of Metastrongylus species?
15-60mm, 2 trilobed lips; copulatory bursa and long spicules
what is the life cycle of Metastrongylus species?
ingest infected earthworm > migrate to lungs > mature in lungs > adult worms produce larvated eggs > eggs coughed up, swallowed and passed in feces so larvated eggs or L1 in feces
what is the pathogenesis of Metastrongylus species?
reduced weight gain
what are the clinical signs of Metastrongylus species?
cough when stressed/excited
what is the treatment of Metastrongylus species?
fenbendazole/ivermectin or prevent access to earthworms
how do we diagnose Metastrongylus species?
baermann technique (larvated eggs or larvae in fresh feces)
where do we find Aelurostrongylus abstrusus?
lungs of cat
what is the morphology of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus?
up to 10mm, males have copulatory bursa, L1 larvae have kink/S-shape in tail
what is the life cycle of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus?
cats ingest infected snail/slug or infected paratenic host (bird) that has ingested L1 > matures to L3 in 2-5w > cat ingest L3 > migrates from stomach to lung > mature to adults in lung > mating and eggs > larvae hatch out in lung parenchyma > L1 coughed up, swallowed, L1 out in feces
what is the pathogenesis of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus?
the egg masses are small, grayish subpleural nodules in lung parenchyma > inflammatory nodules. Adult worms: smooth muscles hyperplasia, pulmonary hypertrophy, lung opacities
what are the clinical signs of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus?
chronic cough, anorexia, wasting, thoracic rads
what is the prepatent period for Aelurostrongylus abstrusus?
5-6wks
what is the diagnosis for Aelurostrongylus abstrusus?
Baermann or direct smear for L1 larvae in feces or sputum
what is the treatment of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus?
fenbendazole, ivermectin; restrict access to paratenic host
