Electronic faucet

Quality faucets are predominantly manufactured from what?

Yellow brass.

What are some of the materials used to make various cartridge components?

Stainless steel

Plastic

Nylon

Ceramic

Teflon

Any variation in line pressure to either hot or cold supply will result in what in a single handle faucet?

Fluctuations in temperature and pressure from the faucet.

Single handle tub or shower applications allow for the addition of a balancing mechanism which will?

Limit fluctuations in temperature at the faucet outlet.

What three requirements do frost free faucets, hose bibs or hydrants have?

The shut off portion (valve stem and seat) is located in a warm environment

The barrel of the valve is installed so water can drain out after use

Require a self draining hose end vacuum breaker

Where are metering faucets most commonly used?

Commercial hand washing and showering applications

What are the four styles of faucets?

Washer

Washerless

Ball

Cartridge

What are the installation requirements of single handle tub/shower installation?

Must be anchored to the framework around the tub/shower.

Valve body must be placed in a manner that permits finished wall with completed finishing material.

Name the components of this washer style faucet cartridge.

A) stem assembly or cartridge

B) spline

C) stem

D) bonnet seal

E) Bibb washer

F) brass seat

The Bibb washer or faucet washer is a neoprene composite material. What are the manufactured configurations?

Beveled

Flat

Use caution when tightening a Bibb washer to the retaining cup. What may happen if it is over tightened?

If the washer fits tight to the retaining cup prior to tightening, the retaining cup may split or expand upon tightening or when the bib washer is compressed during usage. The expansion of the retaining cup will cause damage to the stem or internal damage to the faucet.

How do you determine if the seat in a faucet is removable?

A round opening indicates that the seating area is a vast portion of the valve body and is not replaceable. The hexagonal or square opening permits the seat to be removed and reinstalled by using properly shaped and sized seat removal tool.

What would be the most common cause of ceramic disk failure?

Debris in the cartridge and supply water.

Sand can cut grooves into the disk face. The entire cartridge must be replaced.

What are the four flush valve types?

Piston

Diaphragm

Metering

Electronically controlled solenoid

What type of flush valve?

Piston

Name the type of flush valve.

Diaphragm

What is this?

Metering flush valve

Worn O-rings

Damage to seat and seat spring on washerless assembly

Packing shrinkage

Gasket or O-ring failure

What can be a common cause for reduced water flow from a faucet?

Failed or fouled flow restrictor

Mineral or calcium buildup or debris in aerator.

What is a safe practice for removing a Bibb washer?

Place the stem in the faucet handle to protect your hand from the screw driver.

What does NPC 2.2.10.7 refer to?

Shower valves.

All shower valves must be the pressure balance or thermostatic mixing type and the outlet must not exceed 49C

What type of flush valve?

What is a flush valve?

A metering device that permits a predetermined volume of water to be delivered during each operating cycle.

What is the minimum and maximum operating pressure of most flush valves?

Which type is the exception?

Minimum 100 kPa

Maximum 550 kPa

Exception, the metering flush valve, follow manufactured specs.

Describe the operation of the piston flush valve.

Piston flush valves are divided into upper and lower chambers with equal water pressure in both chambers when the valve is in the closed position.

Slight handle movement pushes a plunger and allows water to escape the upper chamber. The water in the lower chamber is now greater and it raises the piston from where it was seated, allowing water to flow through the valve outlet to the fixture. While the valve is operating a small amount of water flows through a bypass filling the upper chamber. As the chamber fills the piston is returned to its seat.

Describe the operation of a diaphragm flush valve.

Divided into two chambers. Upper chamber holds the water that keeps the diaphragm closed until the handle is tripper to start the flushing process. Depress the handle a relief valve is opened allowing water to the upper chamber to stop the process.

What is the minimum supply piping size for all flush valves serving a WC?

1"

What minimum size of supply piping is required for metering flush valves?

Diaphragm and piston flush valves?

Metering 1/2"

What is a form of back flow prevention used in newer flush valves?

Flush valve shut off with internal spring check.

Which style of faucet requires the most maintenance?

Washer style faucet.

Which type of faucet is generally used for residential lawn service?

Frost free

Which type of faucet is least likely to be used in a residential application?

Electronic (self-test answer key)

Metering (IMHO)

Which two styles of faucets use seals held in place with the aid of a spring to prevent water leakage through the faucet?

Washer-less faucet

Ball style faucet

What must be done prior to working on any faucet?

Turn off the water to both hot and cold supplies

What is the advantage of using a plastic nut and washer rather than a steel nut and washer for fastening a two-handle faucet to the fixture?

If the faucet should leak around the stem, a plastic nut and washer will not deteriorate as a metal nut and washer would.

What is attached to a shower valve to aid in correct positioning of the valve?

A plaster guard

What is attached to a shower valve to aid in correct positioning of the valve?

A plaster guard

In what two configurations are Bibb washers manufactured?

Beveled

Flat

What does the Bibb washer close against in most washer style faucets?

Brass seat

What does the Bibb washer close against in most washer style faucets?

Brass seat

Why is it important that the Bibb washer fit into the retaining cup on the faucet stem?

The retaining cup may split or expand upon tightening or when the Bibb washer is compressed during usage, causing damage to the stem or internal damage to the faucet.

How can you tell if the brass seat in a washer style faucet is replaceable?

If the brass seat has a square or hexagonal opening it can be replaced.

What causes the wire drawing of a brass seat?

Water moving in a fine spray between the Bibb washer and brass seat for a long period of time.

What is used to direct water flow from the kitchen faucet to the vegetable spray?

Diverter

Pliers should not be used on which types of faucet surfaces?

Chrome finishes or special surfaces.
