Common Lay Theory
emotion eliciting event causes the psychological state of fear and this leads to phsyiological arousal, or activation of the autonomic nervous system
James-Lange Theory
an emotion eliciting event causes a physiological state/ANS activation and this leads to the psychological state (ie. you feel sad because you're crying, nervous because your heart is racing)
Cannon-Bard Theory
The physiological response and the psychological response to an emotional event are activated simultaneously. They believed that the ANS gets you ready for a crisis, ready to respond, regardless of the emotion.
Schacter-Singer Theory
An emotional event causes the ANS to be activated at the same time the brain appraises the situation. The amount of autonomic arousal determines the intensity of the psychological state of the emotion, whereas the cognitive appraisal of the situation determines the type of emotional state.
What happened in schacter's experiment when some volunteers whom were injected with epinephrine and were told of the effects and others were not?
Volunteers who were not informed of the effects reported feeling an emotion. This supported the James-Lange theory that ANS activation leads to psychological emotion.
