Consciousness
Immediate awareness of thoughts, sensations, memories, & world around you.
Circadian Rhythm
Biological processes that systematically vary over a period of 24 hours. Processes are guided by light/dark cycles. Ex. Temperature, mental alertness, blood pressure, sleep/wake.
Supraciasmatic Nucleus (SCN)
Cluster of neurons found in hypothalamus that regulate circadian rhythms.
How your circadian rhythms work?
Photoreceptor in the eye detect less light. Message of low light sent by the visual system to the SCN. Less light equals to increase in melatonin. Melatonin increases sleepiness and decreases activity level. When light increases, message is sent to the SCN and melatonin production is stopped. Melatonin levels stay low during the day because light is present.
Free Running Circadian Rhythms
Your body shifts to a 25 hour clock in complete darkness. Body rhythms lack synchronization; the body doesn't operate in the usual balanced way.
