Neuroplasticity

Also known as brain plasticity. It is an umbrella term that encompasses both synaptic plasticity and non synaptic plasticity

Refers to changes in neutral pathways and synapses due to changes around and in you.

Nervous System

CNS is made up of your brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. They regulate all the conscious and unconscious aspects of your life.

The scientific study of the brain and nervous system is called neuroscience or neurobiology.

Facts about the brain

Weighs 3lbs. Made up of 100 billion nervous cells called neurons.


2% of the human body, but uses 25% of the body's energy.


Brain and spinal cord protected by: skull and vertebrae (makes up the spine).

Brain and spinal cord cushioned by layers of membrane called meninges and a special fluid called cerebrospinal fluid

Three sections of the brain

The forebrain

Longest and most complex.


Consists of cerebrum (info that makes us who we are)


Outer layer of cerebrum referred to as cortex of gray matter.


Four lobes: frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal.


Cerebrum has hemispheres (right and left) connected by corpus collosum.


Inner part of forebrain: thalamus (carries message from senses to the cortex), hypothalamus (controls body processes i.e. 😴), and pituitary gland (makes hormones).



The midbrain

Underneath the forebrain.


Coordinator for messages going in & out of brain to spinal cord

The hindbrain

Underneath the back end of the cerebrum.


Consists of cerebellum, pons, and medulla oblongata.


Cerebellum (little brain) - responsible for balance, movement, and coordination.


Pons and Medulla oblongata - brainstem

Autonomic nervous system: sympathetic ( fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest)
