Nervous System |
CNS is made up of your brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. They regulate all the conscious and unconscious aspects of your life. |
The scientific study of the brain and nervous system is called neuroscience or neurobiology. |
Facts about the brain |
Weighs 3lbs. Made up of 100 billion nervous cells called neurons. 2% of the human body, but uses 25% of the body's energy. Brain and spinal cord protected by: skull and vertebrae (makes up the spine). |
Brain and spinal cord cushioned by layers of membrane called meninges and a special fluid called cerebrospinal fluid |
Three sections of the brain |
The forebrain The midbrain The hindbrain |
The forebrain |
Longest and most complex. Consists of cerebrum (info that makes us who we are) Outer layer of cerebrum referred to as cortex of gray matter. Four lobes: frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal. Cerebrum has hemispheres (right and left) connected by corpus collosum. Inner part of forebrain: thalamus (carries message from senses to the cortex), hypothalamus (controls body processes i.e. 😴), and pituitary gland (makes hormones). |
The midbrain |
Underneath the forebrain. Coordinator for messages going in & out of brain to spinal cord |
The hindbrain |
Underneath the back end of the cerebrum. Consists of cerebellum, pons, and medulla oblongata. Cerebellum (little brain) - responsible for balance, movement, and coordination. Pons and Medulla oblongata - brainstem |
Basic Body Functions |
Autonomic nervous system: sympathetic ( fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest) |
Senses |
Sight Hearing - nerve signals Taste - messages sent to cortex Smell - linked to memories Touch |
Problems that affect the brain |
Brain tumor Cerebral palsy Epilepsy Headaches: tension, cluster, migraine Meningitis and encephalitis Mental illness Head injuries: internal and external Concussions |
