Author Description: She is an American author, best known for her narrative prose (fiction and non-fiction). Dillard has written poetry, essays, prose, and literary criticism, as well as two novels and one memoir. She also taught for 21 years and won the Pulitzer Prize.


Brief Summary: She is out with all her friends, (all boys), and they are throwing snowballs at cars. They hit a certain car and it pulls over. The man gets out and chases them all over the neighborhood until he catches them and scolds them... She most likely finds thrill in getting in trouble.


Context: On a cold day, when she is a child, on Renold's Street.

1874 Case of Mary Ellen

Author: Howard Markel


Author Description: He is an American physician, author, editor, professor, and medical historian, as well as the Professor of the History of Medicine at the University of Michigan.


Brief Summary: A young girl who should have had a normal life was thrown into a series of misfortunes. He father died in the war, and her mother was forced to work multiple jobs and eventually didn't have the money to care for Mary Ellen. She was put up for adoption, and when the adoptive father died, the overburdened mother resorted to beating Mary Ellen. However, in those times, there were no laws protecting children.


Context: The movie "Precious" had just been produced, so there was a lot of talk on the subject of children's rights. The original case took place in 1874 in the Hell's Kitchen part of Manhattan.


Representative Sentence: "Tellingly, the case was brought by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty toAnimals. In 1874, there were no laws protecting children from physical abuse from their parents. It was an era of “spare the rod and spoil the child,” and parents routinely meted out painful and damaging punishment without comment or penalty."

Author: Elizabeth Gilbert


Author Description: an American author, essayist, short story writer, biographer, novelist and memoirist. She is best known for her 2006 memoir, Eat, Pray, Love, which was also made into a film.


Brief Summary: A young girl traveling around Europe talks about her life changing experience in Naples. She loves the ruggedness of the city. She talks about the food she eats as well, especially the pizza.


Context: A traveler going around Europe

Author: David Foster Wallace


Author Description: an American author of novels, short stories and essays, as well as a professor of English and creative writing. He was described as one of the most influential writers for the past 20 years, and Wallace died in 2008.


Brief Summary: A commencement speech to the 2005 graduating class from Keyon College, where he talks about how some of the most important realities in life are the hardest ones to understand. He says that getting angry and annoyed is the easy thing to do, but you can't sweat the little stuff. You can never understand the situations of the people around you, and you have to be sensitive to that.
