Ecumenical
|
It is used in this class to emphasize the universal and inclusive dimensions in the Bible. The term refers to something which has a worldwide range in applicability; universal. 2. Pertaining to the Christian Church, esp in regard to unity (ecumenism)- a movement seeking to achieve worldwide unity among religions through greater cooperation and improved understanding. This unity can also include dialogue with non-religious ideas.

Anthropomorphism
|
A term for the attribution of human behavior or characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, natural phenomena, or deity; with regard to deity, this became a point of theological discussion in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Theodicy
|
(Greek for "Justice of God") A term that denotes the issue of God's justice in relation to the problem of human suffering, used often in discussion of the book of Job relating to the attempt to justify God in the face of evil.

A group of people forming a distinct unit within a larger group by virtue of certain refinements or distinctions of belief or practice.

|
"Worldly" rather than spiritual. Not particularly pertaining to religion. It has deep roots in the eighteenth century, stemming from the rise of science in the western world with new discovers, new insights, new techniques, and new methods for improving the life of humankind. The notion of the sovereignty of God over human affairs receded as women and men placed increasing trust in their own ability to manage their own affairs and determine their own destiny.

This is a naturally by-product of seeking to critically understand the biblical text. After engaging in lexical studies, syntactical diagrams reading critical opinions and exploring critical opinions the Bible does not seem as alive as it once did. Such critical engagement can cause one to have difficulty praying and approaching the text in a devotional sense.
