What is salmonella?

A bacteria that causes intestinal infection

What causes salmonella

Drinking or eating food that has been contaminated with salmonella bacteria



Can cause typhoid fever ( Salmonella typhi)

Pathogenesis of salmonella

Salmonella enterica can only affect the stomach and digestive tract



It enters the small intestine and multiplies in tissues, it spreads through out digestive tract and stomach and causes infection



Lasts about 8-10 days


Clinical manifestations of Salmonella

Diarrhea


Fever


Abdominal cramps


Vomiting


Dehydration



Develops in about 12-72 hrs
