Ecosystem
An Ecosystem is a community and its physical environment together. All the populations of organisms living together in an environment make up a community.
Niche
A niche describes how the species meet its needs and how it affects other organisms. For example: Salt grass provides a home for snails to live on. Salt grass also provides protection for baby fish and shrimp among its underwater stems.
Adapt
Every organism has adaptations that help it compete for resources. For example: a cheetah has speed so it can captures its prey.
Habitat
A place in an ecosystem where a population lives. For example frogs live in ponds. That is its habitat.
Extinction
This is when an organism or animal no longer exists. It was wiped out.
Competition
Where animals compete for the resources in an ecosystem such as food. Animals are in competition for the same food. For example: Hyenas and Cheetahs hunt the same type of animals for food.
Instinct
Behavior that an organism inherits. For Example: Animals have an instint to survive or protect themselves from danger.
Environment
Everything a living organism needs in order to survive. For example: food, soil, weather, landform, air, and water.
Reproduction
This is where cells from two parents form together to make one cell. In turn that cell multiplies and forms to create a plant or living organism.
Pesticides
Chemicals used to kill a wide variety of unwanted plants or animal pests. The use of these chemicals can damage the ecosystem.
Population
All the individuals of the same kind of living thing in the same environment. For example: A mound of ants in an ant hill.
Inherited Trait
Characteristic that is passed on from one parent to their offspring. For example: hair color, eye color, fur color is an inherited trait.
Learned Behavior
A behavior that is learned from their parents, not inherited. For example: Lions learn how to hunt from their parents in order to survive.
Food Web
A food web shows the relationship between many different food chains in a single ecosystem. For example: A shark can eat several types of sea animals in the ocean.
Food Chain
A food chain shows how the consumers in an ecosystem are connected to one another to what they eat. For example: An insect will eat grass. A frog will eat an insect. A snake will eat a bird.
Predator
An animal that hunts another animal for food.
Producer
A living thing that makes its own food. For example: Plants
Prey
The animal that is hunted.
What do all animals need in order to live?
Air, Water, Food, and Shelter
Food Chain
grass-insect-frog-snake
The path of food from one living thing to another. |
Consumer
A living thing that eats other living things. All animals are consumers.
What are the parts of an ecosystem?
Population(frogs)
Community (all the populations that live there) Habitat (home where the animal lives) |
Environment
Everything around a living thing.
Decomposer
A living thing that breaks down dead things for food.
