The Agricultural Act

(1948) signed into law by Truman. Authorized agricultural subsidies and price supports at 90% parity

Child nutrition act

(1966) Johnson signed into law. Established a federally assisted School Breakfast program that provides low cost and free food to children in public schools and childcare institutions.

Emergency Food Assistance Act

(1983) amended Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Act of 1983. Authorized multi-year funding and commodity donations towards emergency feeding orgs for the needy and homeless. Became Emergency Food Assistance and Soup Kitchen-Food Bank Program

Food Stamp Act

(1964) signed into law by Lyndon Johnson. Provided permanent legislative authority to the Food Stamp Program of 1962. Replaced by the Food and Agriculture Act of 1977, which eliminated purchase requirements and simplified eligibility.

Food Conservation and Energy Act

(2008) five year Agricultural policy bill that was continuation of 2002 Farm Bill. Continued Agricultural subsidies as well as energy, conversation, nutrition and rural development. Also included increase to food stamp benefits. Vetoed by Bush but overridden by Senate and Congress

Hunger Prevention Act

(1988) signed by Reagan. Amended Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Act of 1983 to make additional types of commodities available for the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)

Work Investment Act

(1998) signed by Clinton. provides workforce investment activities, through statewide and local workforce investment systems, that increase the employment, retention, and earnings of participants, and increase occupational skill attainment by participants, and, as a result, improve the quality of the workforce, reduce welfare dependency, and enhance the productivity and competitiveness of the Nation

Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)

(1997) Succeeded ADFC. Came into being after Clinton signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996

Alcohol, Drug Abus, and Mental Services Blocks Grant (ADMS)

Federal assistance grant given by DHHS. Was created with passage of 1981 Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act.It replaced four earlier grant programs legislated by the Community Mental Health Centers Act, Mental Health Systems Act, Comprehensive Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation Act and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act.

Housing and Community Development Act

(1974) signed by Gerald Ford. Created Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and was a response to Nixon's 1973 moratorium on HUD spending/programs.meant to “redistribute influence from the federal bureaucracies to local governments”

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

(2009) signed by Obama. Stimulus bill made in response to great recession that focused on saving jobs and providing temporary relief programs to those affected. No Republicans voted in favor of it.

Section 8 of Housing Act

(1937) authorizes payments of rental housing assistance to private landlords. Signed by FDR

Housing act of 40's

(1949) signed by Truman. Expanded federal role in mortgage insurance and extended Federal funding to build more than 800,000 public housing units.

Housing and Community Development Act

(1974) signed by Gerald Ford. Amended 1937 Housing Act to make section 8 housing and authorized Entitlement Community Grants to be awarded by HUD

Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)

Program in effect from 1935 to 1996 created by the SSA of 1935. Administered by DHHS

Civilian Conservation Corps

Established by FDR executive order 6101 in 1933. Public jobs program for conversation and development of natural resources that was meant to aid the unemployed and needy following the great depression. Lasted until 1942

Civil Works Administration

Project created as a result of Federal Emergency Relief Act from Nov 1933 to March 1934. Meant to create new construction and infrastructure jobs

Works Progress Administration

Established May 1935 by FDR executive order 7034 to carry out public works projects and employ millions of job seekers. Federal Project Number One was a part of WPA, focusing on funding for the humanities. Headed by Harry Hopkins, a prominent social worker. WPA was liquidated in 1843 because of WWII

Sheppard-Towner Act

(1921) approved five year appropriations to teach child hygiene and welfare. Signed by Warren G Harding

Federal Employers Liability Act

(1908) enacted in 1906 and declared unconstitutional by USSC. Passed in 1908. First instance of worker's comp to railway workers. Signed by Theo Roosevelt

Emergency Immigration act

(1921) aka Emergency Quota Act, signed by Harding. Set favorable quotas for northern/Western Europeans over Eastern/southern Europeans. Tightened by immigration act of 1924.

Plessy v Ferguson

(1896) supreme Court ruling that approved Jim Crow doctrine of "separate but equal"

Older Americans Act

(1965) signed by Johnson. Addressed material needs of those over 60. Part of "great society" reforms.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Created by SSA amendments of 1972 and implemented in 1974. Means-tested cash assistance to those >65, blind or disabled. Signed by Nixon.

Civil Rights Act

(1964) signed by Johnson. forbade job discrimination and segregation of public accomodations.

Voting rights act

(1965) signed by Johnson. Assured minority registration and voting. Suspended literacy and other voter qualification tests.

Economic Opportunity Act

(1964) signed by Johnson. Meant to target the roots of poverty through programs. They were the job corps, youth corps, work study, urban and community action,adult education, and voluntary assistance to needy children programs.
