What do the Sun and other stars burn for fuel? How do stars convert mass to energy?
Hydrogen. Nuclear Fusion.
Where do stars form?
Higher density regions of the interstellar medium form clouds, where star formation takes place.
Planetary Nebula
The ejected envelope of a red giant star, spread over a volume roughly the size of our solar system.
Emission Nebula
A glowing cloud of hot interstellar gas.
White Dwarf
A dwarf star with sufficently high surface temperature that it glows white.
Black Dwarf
The endpoint of the evolution of an isolated, low-mass star.
Brown Dwarf
Fragments of collapsing gas and dust that did not contain enough mass to initiate core nuclear fusion.
What is a pulsar? How are they detected?
Object that emits raditation in the form of rapid pulses with a characteristic pulse period and duration. Detected through radio telescopes.
What is a black hole? How are they detected?
A region of space where the pull of gravity is so great that nothing can escape. Detected by observing the gravitational effects on other objects nearby.
What is a supernova? How do the two types differ?
Explosive death of a star, caused by sudden onset of nuclear burning (Type I), or an enormously energetic shock wave (Type II).
Hayashi Track
Evolutionary track followed by a protostar during the final pre-main-sequence phase before nuclear fusion begins.
