What are the typical steering complaints?
- looseness
- wander - pull - binding - vibration - noises - poor assist - off-centre steering wheel |
What are the problems related to steering systems?
- Steering Linkage
- steering Gears (looseness, roughness and binding) |
What are the types of power steering problems?
- Noises (squealing / buzzing caused by loose belt or low fluid level)
- Assist problems - Power Steering pull (self-steer) - Leakage |
Poor power assist that occurs ONLY when the system is cold is called morning sickness.
What is the probable cause? |
internal leakage around the directional control valve due to wear in the flow control valve housing bore
One very common steering complaint is steering wheel position.
What is the cause of this? |
incorrect tracking or improper toe adjustment
What is the highest contributing factors to understeer / oversteer?
- tire structure
- tread design - and inflation (pressure) due to great variations in slip angle |
What causes bump steer?
- unequal toe change
- changes in rear thrust angle during jounce and rebound (worn bushings or bent rear suspension components) |
What causes memory steer?
- binding ball joints or upper strut bearings
What causes tire squeal on turns at low speed?
incorrect turning radius (bent steering arm)
What causes body roll?
- weak or broken stabilizer bar
- worn or broken stabilizer links or bushings - excessive loading of vehicle - low tire pressures - load rating of tires too low - excessive speed on corners |
What causes scrub radius?
- mismatched tires or wheels
- uneven tire pressures - bent steering knuckles |
What is the primary aim of high SAI?
improve vehicle directional stability at high speed, especially during emergency manoeuvres causing tire blowout.
If included angle measurements are correct (equal), you can be sure that the spindles / struts are NOT bent.
..
If camber and SAI are both incorrect and opposite, what needs to be corrected to correct both camber and SAI?
the engine cradle
Never use heat to straighten or repair steering or suspension components. Why?
Heating or welding can drastically affect the strength of the metal and integrity of the component, possibly making the vehicle unsafe to drive. Replacement is the only method.
