acronym
a set of letters representing the first letters of two or more words, usually of a name or title. The letters are pronounced as a word e.g NATO. see also initialism.
adjectives gradable/ungradable
an adjective describes or gives more information about a noun or pronoun and may or may not be measurable in degrees e.g. exciting is gradable and perfect is not.
adverbial
a word, phrase or clause acting as an adverb e.g She cut the paper right across the middle where right across the middle is an adverbial.
affricate
a sound produced by stopping the air flow then releasing it with friction e.g. /dz/ job /tf/ chips
alveolar (ridge)
the ridge at the top of the mouth between the teeth and the hard palate. Several sounds e.g. /t/ /d/ are made in this area
anaphoric reference
reference to something that occurs earlier in the text; often achieved by use of pronouns or lexical chains e.g Singapore is on the sea. It shares a border with Malaysia
lexical chain
a series of words related through a topic and that in discourse serves to provide cohesion e.g. shop - shop assistant - counter - sale
assimilation
when a sound in connected speech becomes similar to a neighbouring sound e.g. He grew up in Britain where /n/ in in is likely to be assimilated to /m/ resulting in imbritain
back-channeling
when a listener signals understanding, surprise, agreement etc to a speaker whilst they are speaking
bilabial
a sound produced with both lips e.g./m/ /b/
