What is adhesion?

Water sticks to walls

What is cohesion?

Water sticks to other water molecules

How does the cohesion-tension theory work?

Water molecules are linked through the cohesive forces of h bonds. When water evaporates from cells the rest of the water in the chain is pulled into the cell by osmosis - pull top one up pulls rest up

How do you change the date of transpiration?

Open stomata - more evaporation - more water loss = higher rate of transpiration

Closed stomata - less evaporation - less water loss = lower rate of transpiration

How do stomata open?

If water flows into the guard cells they become turgid and open stomata

How do stomata close?

If water moves out of guard cells they become flavor and close

how does humidity affect rate of transpiration?

High humidity = lie rate of transpiration bc water in the air creates a low concentration gradient so water vapour is unable to evaporate of the surface of the leaves

How does air movement affect the rate of transpiration?

Fast air movement carries water off the plant (increases transpiration) and the plants lose more water

What else affects the rate of transpiration?

Temperature

Soil water availability

Light intensity

How does a potometer work?

Blow a bubble and time how long it takes to move through the tube = speed of transpiration
